Paris: European aircraft maker Airbus believes the United States will be the biggest customer for its A400M military transport plane, despite a fatal crash involving one of them during a test flight last month.

"By the next decade at the latest, the US armed forces will be the biggest customer for the aircraft," Airbus chief executive Tom Enders told the weekly magazine WirtschaftsWoche in an interview.

Despite its current technical problems, there was no other rival product at the moment, Enders argued.

Boeing`s C-17 was larger and Lockheed Martin`s C-130 was smaller.

"But a lot of countries don`t want either extreme. For the next few years, there will only be one alternative, the A400M, which is also a lot more fuel-efficient and more versatile," he said.

An A400M plane crashed during a test on May 9 near Seville in Spain, killing four of the six people on board and seriously injuring the two others.

The A400M, a large, propeller-driven transport aircraft, was launched in 2003 and is assembled in Seville. But Britain, Germany, Turkey, Malaysia and Spain grounded their A400M planes after the crash.

An initial analysis of the black boxes revealed that three of the aircraft`s four engines failed, Airbus has said.

Enders said Airbus was sticking to its sales and earnings targets for this year, despite the crash.

"We`re on the right path to achieve our published goals for 2015," the CEO said.

Airbus is looking to increase both sales and earnings this year.

"In 2014, our operating profit was four billion euros on sales of 60 billion euros," he said. Cash flow was positive, at 88 million euros, compared with a negative cash flow of around one billion euros in 2013.

Turning to the possibility of upgrading its super jumbo A380, Enders said a decision would be reached by the end of this year.

"The administrative board will need until the end of the year to get a full picture of the situation and to reach a decision," Enders said.

"It is one of the most difficult product decisions of the last few years. But it`s clear: there won`t be an A380 with new engines for just one customer."

Dubai`s Emirates Airline in particular is pushing for a more fuel-efficient variant of the superjumbo.

Enders said Airbus had succeeded in reducing fuel consumption of the A380 by several percent even without the engines.

"One option I`m concretely thinking about would be innovations in the cabin," he said, adding that new engines would be one of a number of possible engines.

usa will never buy foreign goods, specially those in which it is extremely good, airbus should learn from what happened with its tanker program, a-330 mrtt for kc-x program.

.
USA treats Western-european vassals states like a abusive husband treats his wife.

One day the husband give her a punch (hacking A400M eleven months after hacking eurofighter, same day, same place).
The next day the husband say I Love You (this news).

USA uses so much the fear and the richness to rule its brainless vassals.

Always better to read and get knowledge before making authoritative statements.

There is a PREFERENCE for US made goods but this has been bypassed many times in the past and many times recently.

Even the oto melara 76mm gun used to be widely used by USN is from Italy.

possible C17 replacement?

@jhungary @SvenSvensonov

IMO? No.

C-17 have twice the payload of A-400M (well, almost twice @70,000kgs vs 37,000kgs)

C-17 is faster and have a higher service ceiling, which mean C-17 can take more load and arrive at your destination faster than an A-400M. Which A-400M excel in taking a smaller load with a longer range, which makes C-17 a strategic Lifter and A-400M a tactical lifter.

If for any reason A-400M would be introduced to USAF, the reason would be to replace C-130 (I don't think they can even replace C-5 which have a comparative load)

But for all intend and purposes, USAF won't buy A-400M.

The statement "United States will not buy foreign equipment" is only half true (or half false, depend on how you look at it). US Military require all equipment to be domestically made. and will full function production line. So when US Military buys or bought a foreign equipment, essentially they (Foreign manufacturer) would have to enter into a Joint Venture or start their own branch in the US.

Airbus is JV with Northrop Grumman in the US, which does not make any cargo lifter, it would be hell for them to enter an established 2 horse race with LM and Boeing which have entrenched in this field.

US have been an active country purchasing foreign equipment or JV with foreign venture some example included

LAV III - GM Land System Canada - MOWAG (Swiss Subsidiary)
AT-4 Light rocket launcher - SAAB Sweden (build by UDI now BAe System Land and Armament in Virginia)
M240 Machine Gun - FN Hersel build in US FN factory
LCS - Austal Shipbuilding (Australia) build by Austal USA in Mobile Alabama

but as far as i read u guys arent inducting C17 class heavy transport either for short to medium term after they retire? so maybe compensated by this............

.
Systems I know of that are in use in US sourced from other nations.

Popeye Air to Surface missile - Rafael (Israel)
LITENING designation pod - Rafael (Israel)
JHMCS - inspired and influenced by Elbit (Israel) HMCS.
Goshawk - BAe Hawk (UK)
Harrier - BAe Harrier (UK)

Although these systems might have several modifications, the original design did not originate in US.
