KARACHI: The Edhi Foundation has added another modern aircraft to its existing fleet with an aim to strengthen air ambulance service and help people in emergencies.

The aircraft named Cessna T206H Turbo Stationair has been added to the fleet. The plane is six-seater and will help in rescue efforts in difficult areas. The operation cost of the jet is Rs 50,000 per hour. The jet is bought for Rs 55 million.

Earlier, the Edhi Foundation had Piper Seneca aircraft for its operations, and its per hour cost ranged between Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000.

Head of Edhi Foundation, Faisal Edhi, said the air ambulance service was offered free of charge in case of any major disaster or catastrophe. He said airspace closure brought difficulties in operations as it happened recently during the Pak-India tensions.

He stated that a special permission had to taken in case of airspace closure to continue air operations.

He said he had a dream of flying the aircraft to rescue people in emergencies or calamity hit areas.

Faisal Edhi is the head of Pakistan’s largest welfare organization founded by his father single-handedly. Abdul Sattar Edhi died in July 2016.

Reports said the death of Edhi Foundation’s chief pilot Captain Imtiaz in 2014 was the reason behind shutting down the air ambulance service.

The foundation’s managing trustee, Faisal Edhi, handed over the six-seat #Cessna 206 to Edhi air ambulance wing at the old #Karachi airport. Faisal is also the head of Edhi Air Ambulance Service.

The foundation decided to expand its fleet to provide the people of far-flung areas easy and fast access to health care services in case of an emergency. The aircraft will strengthen the charity’s air ambulance service, as it will help execute the rescue efforts in remote regions.

The operation cost of the jet is Rs. 50,000 per hour while its acquisition cost the foundation Rs. 55 million. The Edhi Air Ambulance Service already possess a Piper Seneca aircraft and a Bell 206 helicopter that provide assistance during natural calamities.

“Now the fleet can provide airlift services to stranded or injured people and immediately shift them to the nearby hospital during a crisis,” says Faisal Edhi.

He also expressed gratitude to the overseas Pakistanis residing in Britain for their donations that enabled the purchase of the aircraft

For a foundation like Edhi which have its presence in all over Pakistan and run on donations, i think the air service is just a waste of money. Instead they should strengthen their ambulances of which some are very old now. I remember my school days when we used to daily donate some part of our pocket money at a edhi point in the way. I dont remember doing this since last 10 years. Neither I hear someone doing this. Which means Donar base is reducing. And its the same thing that faisal Edhi mentioned in his interview that after the death of A.S Edhi our donations are reduced significantly. So Edhi cannot afford these 50000-70000 per hot expenses anymore and thats when the jet is in air. What about ground expenses ? But all that is my assessment, maybe they have a point for this which i am unable to comprehend. The thing i can do is pray for A.S Edhi and his family and his Child i.e; this foundation.

Actually the step is commendable but they should have went for helicopters. Those reach every terrain possible.
Also is there some way to make this foundation a state emergency foundation, and merge 1122 with it, but run by this foundation? I feel lile they would be more competent then a federal government, it also takes some burden of the government.

That will hurt the Name of this organization. Peope may stop funding it. Allocation of some 2-3 billion from Federal government on thebother hand is a good approch. Use this money in training Edhi employees, improving its management, introduce efficiency, i troduce modern technology and services.
