AI slams gender-based discrimination against Indian women

Amnesty International has lashed out at Indian authorities over the ongoing discrimination and gender-based violence against women and girls.

On Friday, the UK-based group urged the new Indian government to take immediate measures to protect women’s rights and end impunity for any crimes against them.

The human rights group called on authorities to impartially investigate the recent gang rape and murder of two teenage girls in a village in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

On Wednesday, two teenage cousins aged 14 and 16 from a low caste were found hanging from a tree after being gang-raped in their community.

Demonstrators have rallied in the village since the attack, accusing authorities of siding with the suspects.

“Despite the existence of constitutional safeguards and special laws, Dalits across India - and Dalit women in particular - face multiple levels of discrimination and violence,” said said Divya Iyer, a senior researcher at Amnesty International India.

The relatives or victims cannot be identified under Indian law.

Three brothers and two officers have been arrested and charged with rape and murder in connection with the sex attack, said R.K.S. Rathore, a senior police officer, on Friday.

Two other policemen have been sacked over their handling of the case.

Figures released about the number of rape assaults in India reportedly indicate that every 22 minutes, a rape is committed in the country that has a population of over 1.2 billion.

Last year, India made gang-rape punishable by the death penalty even when the victim survives, after a 23-year-old medical student was gang-raped and savagely beaten on a moving bus and thrown out to a street in New Delhi in 2012.

The horrific nature of the crime shocked Indians and mass protests broke out across the country over the government’s failure to protect women against violence.
