AHRC sees India’s hand in Farhad Mazhar abduction

Asian Human Rights Commission on Friday questioned the whole episode of abduction and rescue of poet, writer and researcher Farhad Mazhar, taking him in law enforcers’ custody and the investigation and suspected that India’s hand was in the abduction.
In a statement on Friday, the Hong Kong-based international rights organisation said, ‘Farhad’s abduction and attempted disappearance is a shocking example to the extreme level of threat to persons who dare to challenge the incumbent regime and India’s role in Bangladesh’s internal affair.’
AHRC raised seven questions and said that if the case was not investigated properly and the findings were not made public, ‘this case too will remain as yet another proof to the allegation that it is not Dhaka that is in control of the affairs in Bangladesh, but it is New Delhi.’
AHRC also said that the detectives interrogated Farhad during which he was slapped, starved and was denied the presence of his lawyer.
‘Despite the authorities been able to track Farhad’s movement early on what prevented them from rescuing Farhad for 18 hours and until he was taken 300 kilometres away towards the Indian border,’ AHRC asked.
‘If Farhad’s abduction was in fact carried out by some criminals, how was it possible for them to avoid RAB and police check points that are omnipresent in the country? Does it suggest that in fact the RAB or the police was behind the abduction’, it said.
‘Were the Indian agencies responsible for this abduction, as is believed by a substantial section of the country’s population,’ AHRC said.
AHRC said the statement by the home minister expressing concern about Farhad’s case also suggests that the government of India was behind this case.
