  • ‘I hope you will not let my sacrifice go waste’

Minutes before Mohammad Afzal Guru was taken to gallows in New Delhi’s Tihar jail on the morning of February 9, he quickly wrote a letter addressed to his wife asking her “not to regret” his death, “but celebrate it.”

“Life takes its own course, and God looks after everyone. Be brave and truthful, and everything will be fine,” New Delhi-based Outlook magazine quoted Afzal as saying in the letter, the contents of which have been revealed by Tihar jail officials.

On Friday, February 8, a day before his hanging, Outook said, Afzal had dinner with his fellow prisoners who were in the six other cells of Jail No 3 in Tihar jail. All of them were Kashmiri Muslims, and would meet thrice a day for their meals. This had been Afzal’s routine for the eight years he had been kept in isolation as a prisoner on death row.

“This Friday was no different. The men chatted as usual while they ate. There was no special food for dinner and Afzal had little inkling that it would be his last,” the magazine said.

“On a regular day, Afzal and other prisoners would be let out of their cells at 5.30am to offer prayers. On Saturday morning, however, as Afzal walked towards the cemented open space in the compound, the guard informed him that he would have to offer his prayers alone. Afzal turned and walked towards another block. Once he finished his prayers, he was told that his mercy petition had been rejected and that his execution would take place some two hours later.”

Jail authorities say he was very calm and did not say anything at first, the magazine said. Then he asked for a pen and paper and wrote a letter to his wife. Handing it over to jail authorities, he requested them to get it delivered to his wife.

“In his letter, he asked his wife not to regret his death, but celebrate it,” the jail staff say. “Life takes its own course,” his letter to Tabassum went on to say, “Be brave and truthful, and everything will be fine.”

“All of us are feeling very sad,” the magazine quoted a senior jail official as saying. “He was a noble soul. You ask a peon or a senior official; though they may not talk officially but deep down in their heart they are all feeling bad.”

“Afzal, say those who interacted with him, was pleasant to have around. He enjoyed music; the radio was his constant companion. He’d often complain about the lack of non-vegetarian food. In the time he spent there, he read books on philosophy and poetry.

“He read all the four Vedas. He’d say the teachings of Quran and Vedas are no different. They give the same message: of peace and oneness,” says a top prison official.

Meanwhile, according to a New Delhi-based newspaper, Afzal has mentioned about the brief time given to him for writing the letter. “I am about to be hanged. Now, near the gallows, I want to tell you (family members) that I was not given enough time to write a detailed letter. I am thankful that Allah chose me for this sacrifice. And please take care of Tabasum and Galib,” Afzal said in the letter, according to the newspaper. “Remain united and maintain peace with each other. I hope you will not let my sacrifice go waste. May Allah, give you patience to bear my death.”

The letter, written in Urdu, reached Afzal’s home in Sopore in Indian-occupied Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Monday evening, two days after he was executed. The letter is with the family, which is reluctant to reveal its content for now to avoid further shock. The family has however decided to disclose the contents to media “after some time.”

Afzal had met Tabassum, his elder brother Aijaz Guru and father-in-law in November last year in Tihar jail. It was a routine visit - the family was not aware that Afzal was going to be hanged soon - after which he did not talk to or meet anyone in his family. His state of mind in the last months of life is largely unknown.

However, according to SAR Geelani, Delhi University Professor who was co-accused in the parliament attack case, Afzal was disappointed after the J&K government refused to lodge him to Central Jail Srinagar.

“I used to visit him regularly in jail and went there last in January,” Geelani told the Indian Express. “Afzal was a little upset that day. He had filed a petition for transfer to Srinagar jail a long time ago. But the Jammu and Kashmir government turned down his request. That day, Afzal showed me a letter he had received from the Delhi government saying that J&K had refused to keep him in a prison there. We spoke for a long time that day.”

An innocent life snuffed out in a moment. How callous the world has become. A man who laid down arms in favour of becoming a loyal Indian citizen or a Kashmiri suffered such a violent fate. This is murder and India had every capability, every intention of doing the same to us. Innocent civilians are often picked up as terrorists, especially in UP

Afzal Guru tells family in last letter:

It is this kind of media reporting in Pakistan that creates problem when it comes to peace between two countries.
The passively glorify a criminal,a terrorist,an enemy of democracy and free people and spread that poison among the masses of Pakistan.

The man in Question,Afzal Guru, confessed to his crimes himself, time and again in front of the court as well as media(I have already posted the link of the clipping in my above post).

But then, this Pakistani media decides to take the side of a terrorist. While the same media will be found crying foul, when people in Pakistan get killed by a Taliban attack. That is hypocrisy at its best and shows the level of the Pakistani media.

This systematic brainwashing has created a generation of Pakistani youth who hate India just because they have been told to do so,taught to do so.
Did the report say that the man was indeed a criminal ? No.... that he was accused of aiding in attacking the very center of the largest democracy in the World ? No...rather the report elaborates the human side of the criminal and says half truths, leaving the rest to the Pakistani people to fill up the gaps.

This is biased reporting at its best.
The senior Pakistani members, who can think in a balanced, independent manner, without being dogmatic, please take notice.

Do not wish to comment on this as the courts have decided.

He was hung for what he did before he ' laid down his arms".

BTW where in UP are ppl ' picked up' as suggested ? UP today under SP has the most Pro Muslim Govt any state can ever have.

And then you say why world treat you this way. You are one sick person calling a terrorist who helped in Parliament attack that killed policemen and a police woman. Her kids are brought up without a mother. Same as the people who have lost relatives yesterday in Pakistan.

This so called sympathy for terrorists and concept of Good terrorists/ Bad terrorists that is the reason of the problems in your nation.

Your dear Jehadis who killed innocent Kashmiris and other people in India are the same one who are now killing your own people. Have some shame. And don't bring your family stories. We are sick of it.

YT no working here.

And there was a video of his confession before when he gave up arms. Do you know the man's history? He was part of Congress program where militants gave up arms and surrendered

Social activists demand release of innocent Muslims in UP
The Milli Gazette
Published Online: Apr 28, 2012

By Rajiv Yadav, PUCL

Lucknow: Social activists organised a meet here on 11 April at the U.P. Press Club to press for the demand for the release of innocent Muslims held on terror charges in the state. Social activist and former vice chancellor of Lucknow University Prof. Roop Rekha Verma, Magsaysay award winner Sandeep Pandey, Arundhati Dhuru and lawyers of some of the detainees, Randhir Singh Suman and Mohammad Shoeb, raised their voice demanding the release of innocent Muslims held on terror charges.

Samajwadi Party in its manifesto had promised to release innocent Muslims held in various jails on terror charges. Recently the party decided to release some of them which can be believed to be a step forward towards fulfilling its election promise. From the year 2000 onwards, Muslims and their institutions have been targeted on the pretext of the fight against terror in one way or the other. Of those arrested since that period some have been released because of lack of evidence but many are still languishing in jails not only in Uttar Pradesh but across India. The decision of Samajwadi Party to release some Muslim youths exposed the fact that terrorism has become a political issue rather than a law and order matter and therefore it can be solved politically. There is evidence that UP ATS kidnapped Tariq Qasmi from Azamgarh on 12 December and Khalid Mujahid on 16 December, 2007, for their alleged role in a series of bomb blasts in Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad courts on 23 November 2007. Missing report of Tariq was filed by his grandfather Azhar Ali in Raniki Sarai thana on 14 December 2007. As per RTI reply, Police in Madiyahu revealed that UP ATS had arrested Khalid Mujahid on 16 December from Madiyahu (Jaunpur) district which can be said to be a criminal act. On the contrary, UP STF claimed to have arrested both of them in the morning of 22 December from Barabanki with some explosives and arms.

After having seen its political implications, the then government ordered an inquiry which was to submit its report within six months but till date it has not done so. Aftab Alam Ansari of Kolkataanother? who was incarcerated for the court blast was found innocent and released while Sajjadur Rahman of Kashmir has also been exonerated of any role in the Lucknow blast case.

After the blast in the court in various cities in Uttar Pradesh, Hindutva forces had issued a whip to all advocates not to take up the cases of those accused in terror charges. The reason for this as cited by them was that the court blast was planned to take revenge for Waliullah, an accused in the Sankatmochan blast.

Former ADG of Uttar Pradesh Brij Lal had said on 25 December 2007 that explosives and methods used in the court blasts were similar to that of Makka Masjid blast. Now, as we all know, the truth is that Hindutva terrorists were involved in the Makka Masjid blast, we demand a high level inquiry into these cases. Human rights and political organisations took a decision to fight it out legally. Lawyers of these Muslims youths were attacked and forced to shout slogans like “Hindustan Zindabad” and “Pakistan Murdabad”.

Two youths from Azamgarh were accused of belonging to “Indian Mujahideen” and killed in the Batla House encounter but till date the Central Government has not shown the guts for any kind of judicial inquiry. On 14 August 2008, Abul Bashar, another youth from Azamgarh, was arrested for being an “Indian Mujahideen” member from Beenapara in Azamgarh. In totality, so far 16 youths from Azamgarh have been arrested, while seven are still missing and two were killed in the Batla House encounter. Today, youths from Azamgarh are in jails in Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Maharashtra, Delhi and some other places.

Human rights organisations also demanded inquiry into the attack on a CRPF camp at Rampur which was claimed to be a terror attack just to conceal a fight among CRPF personnel themselves. For this incident, youths named as Kausar Farooqui, Jang Bahadur, Sharif, Gulab Khan of Uttar Pradesh and Sabauddin from Bihar, Faheem Ansari from Mumbai (Notice how peaceful Ansaris are found under each rock) , are languishing in jails in UP. Social activists have demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident of the shootout in the CRPF camp at Rampur.

On 19 June 2007, Nasir Hussain from Munniki Reti of Tehri Garhwal and on 21 June 2007 Mohammad Yakub from Nagina were shown to have been arrested from Lucknow. Likewise, On 19 June Naushad from Nirvana, Alwar (Rajasthan) and Jalaluddin from West Bengal were lifted from Charbagh and their arrests shown in Residency area in Lucknow. On interrogation of Jalaluddin, Ali Akbar Hussain and Sheikh Mukhtar of Bengal were shown to have been arrested from Bengal on 24 June, 2007.

Many youths of the state and from Kashmir have been arrested, claiming they were ISI agents in the state. People of Kashmir are afraid of visiting these places. On 23 December 2007, two Kashmiri youths who were selling woollen clothes, were killed allegedly in a fake encounter in the name of protecting the then chief minister. All these incidents compel us to believe that UP STF and UP police arrest innocent Muslim youths, torture them and collect false evidence which is a crime.

During the political noise over terror, Bajrang Dal workers lost their lives while fabricating a bomb in Kanpur’s Rajiv Nagar area in 2008. At the time, Sri Prakash Jaiswal, MOS Home, had said the a CBI enquiry should be ordered into this incident. The then chief minister Mayawati commented on this that the blasts in UP courts and the CRPF camp too should be probed by CBI. This shows clearly that no probes were ordered for all these blasts due to political complications.

Members of civil society and social activists demanded of the new Samjwadi party government to reciprocate the gesture of the Muslims support to the party by fulfilling the promise made to them in the party manifesto before the elections. They also demanded the immediate release of innocent Muslims and thereafter provide them with opportunities that can ensure them a dignified life after their release. Social activists also demanded proper investigation and action against all those policemen involved in the illegal arrests of innocent Muslims. (Translated from Hindi)

Read carefully third eye. Also note how an Ansari seems to magically appear everywhere. Abdullah Ansari, Abu Ayub Ansari, Pir Roshan all were ansaris. UP today has good governance but it still is happening. Third eye you are a good poster. Don't be chauvinistic about minority issues like the other posters. You saw my posts on minorities and how aggressively I defend them.

There are ways to deal with a problem and first thing is accepting. That way there won't be oppression of Muslims. Our family moved late and both my parents were born in Lucknow. Both spent more years outside Pakistan than in it.

Prove it or shut your mouth. Period.

Wrong, India has killed over 92,000 in Kashmir and many more by statistics of other rights groups and movements.

Hameed Shaheen

ISLAMABAD - Syed Faiz Naqshbandi, a central leader of Pakistan chapter of All Parties Hurriyet Conference while addressing an event on the 21st session of the UN Human Rights Session in Geneva Saturday reminded the world that the Jammu and Kashmir was an international issue of highest sensitive nature, says an email to Kashmir Watch here. The fact is that on this dispute the United Nations Security Council and the United Nations Commission on India and Pakistan (UNCIP) had unanimously adopted/passed a number of standing resolutions indicating the roadmap for its peaceful, based-on-will of the people solution.

Not only the whole UN international community endorsed those resolutions but they were also willingly accepted by India. Those resolutions on Kashmir dispute in fact make them an international composite agreement of binding force, he asserted. But he reminded at the same time that India despite agreeing to implement the UN’s Kashmir mandate has deployed today more than 700,000 troops in Jammu and Kashmir who have killed more than 92,000 Kashmiri men, women and children, rendering them orphans, widows, homeless and businessless.

Mr Naqshbandi elaborated that over 8000 Kashmiris are languishing in jails across India. India had hammered into so-called laws various anti-human mechanisms that flout openly human rights, properties rights, civic rights of Kashmiris and all that connected with them. All these violations of human rights are going on with impunity. Indian occupying armed forces have least regard for the human rights and indulge in every type of violations. It has drastically increased the pace of anti-humanism. Indian denial of right to self-determination has resulted in massive human right violations by Indian troops, he stressed.

Mr Naqshbandi appealed to the international community to take urgent notice of the worst human rights situation in India-held Kashmir. Human morals and values of life demand to safeguard Kashmiri rights, he pleaded.

I ask for evidence, I give you articles, pages and you call it incorrect. Next time I will write an article and post it. Fine?

So you see what your so called support for freedom struggle to Kashmiris have given to them. Deth and destrucion, hundreds of thousands of orphans, widows, homeless and unemployed.

Before you started sending these Jehadis, the Kashmiris were living a great life, it was Heaven n the eearth, Tourism was always on High and Kashmir was a famous Honeymon destination.

You guys created a hell in this region and are responsible for death of so many people and misfortunes of others.

God is watching it and he will deliver the justice in worst form. He has turned your Dogs against you to tell you that Violence and Terrorism is not beneficial for anyone.

Even if you don't understand it, then even God won't save you.

Shias, Hazaras and Ahmedis of Kashmir don't want to be part of Pakistan for obvious reasons.
