Late afternoon on Tuesday, a Mi17 V5 helicopter of the Indian Air Force (IAF) airlifted a Pawan Hans Dauphin helicopter which had crashlanded in Harsil sector near Gangotri in Uttarakhand in the last week of.June, following the floods.

The IAF chopper came into the picture owing to a request placed by Pawan Hans to the Ministry of Defence for IAF assistance. The Dauphin helicopter was airlifted from Harsil to Dharasu and from there to Dehradun where a Pawan Hans team will further examine it.

For over two months, following the crash which occured after a fire a in its tail rotor, since June 28, technicians were trying to fix the helicopter but with little success. Subsequently its tail rotor was chopped off.

The IAF which executed what is world's biggest helicopter borne rescue effort termed Operation Raahat no longer bases its helicopters in Uttarakhand but provides assistance when sought.
