DRDO is giving final touches to its MK-II variant of Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) system which can hit targets up to 60 km and soon it will be offered to Indian Army to begin user trials before it is cleared for production.
Developmental trials of 214 mm Pinaka MK-II unguided rocket system was completed by DRDO earlier this year and currently it has been prepped up for user trials which Indian Army will be carrying out in Jaisalmer by end of this year .
Pinaka MK-II which can hit targets up to 60-65km will provide an extended range of 20kms over the maximum range of 40km of MK-1 variant. In Developmental trials, MK-2 has proved its accuracy and consistency in successive trials held at Balasore and Pokhran firing range as claimed by DRDO.
DRDO also finally has revealed that after MK-II variant DRDO will be working on a Guided multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) system variant of Pinaka in short. Inertial guidance system coupled with a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system will turn next Pinaka variant into short-range,mobile battlefield ballistic missile.
Defense analyst close to idrw.org informed us that a Guided Pinaka will be a tactical asset designed for deployment on the battlefield which will move with advancing strike corp and will give area commander firepower to strike and engage moving ground targets with high-explosive (HE) grenades or use single warhead explosives to take out important enemy equipment’s like SAM batteries, mobile radar system or Communication centers.
DRDO also has developed 150km solid-fuel rocket surface-to-surface guided short-range tactical ballistic missile ” Prahaar” which can take out strategic and tactical targets and was first test fired in 2011. Prahaar and Guided Pinaka will provide better reaction time than liquid-fuelled Prithvi ballistic missiles of Indian Army Said Defense analyst.

Almost a sad good by to Prithvi BM. Feels like just yesterday, when Prithvi was the proud movement of Indian Army.
At the same time, new generation needs to take over.
