ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and Afghanistan are believed to have agreed to sign a comprehensive bilateral security treaty in an effort to promote sustained peace and stability in the region.

Well-placed sources informed TheNation that the two countries agreed to finalise the treaty after an informal meeting of the commanders of ISAF Tripartite Commission comprising USA, Afghanistan and Pakistan held here at a local hotel on Thursday. Sources said that the Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, ISAF Commander in Afghanistan Gen David Petraeus, Afghan Army and Intelligence Chief after their meeting also called on the visiting Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Apart from the proposal for bilateral security treaty mooted out by Gen Kayani, the meeting also discussed matters related to regional security, Pak-Afghan border situation, and cooperation between Pakistan, Afghanistan and ISAF in war against terror. ISPR had no comment to offer about the issues discussed during the meeting.
According to the informed sources, Afghan President Karzai while supporting the proposal of bilateral security treaty also commended the role and sacrifices made by the Pakistani security forces in their fight against terrorism and extremism.

He emphasised the need for evolving a strategy to defeat terrorism in consonance with the ground realities, adding his government was in talks only with those Taliban who had no links with al-Qaeda and supported government efforts for peace and stability.

The meeting also called for enhancing security and intelligence cooperation to control border infiltrations for long-term objectives and to ensure peaceful parliamentary election in Afghanistan scheduled to be held on Friday. Gen Kayani also apprised the meeting of steps taken by Pakistani security forces to defeat terrorists despite unprecedented floods in the country.

ISAF commander general David Petraeus also gave resume of the operational activities in Afghanistan and efforts to train Afghan National Army.
