Bangkok Post : Afghans accuse Pakistan over fresh border shelling

Afghan authorities alleged that hundreds of rockets had been fired into Afghanistan from Pakistan in recent days, killing a child and forcing hundreds to flee their homes.
Interior ministry spokesman Siddiq Siddiqui on Sunday did not specify who was behind the cross-border shelling but added: "We call on Pakistan, whoever is behind the attacks, to prevent it immediately."

He said that more than 340 rockets had been fired into Afghanistan over the past four days, mostly landing in villages and farmland in the province of Kunar.

Two mosques and dozens of houses had been damaged while about 50 families had to flee their homes, Siddiqui added.

Fazilullah Wahidy, the Kunar provincial governor, separately told AFP that at least one boy had been killed in the attacks.

Cross-border shelling incidents frequently cause tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The border area between the two countries is seen as highly dangerous and a sanctuary for militants who launch attacks in Afghanistan.

In June, Afghanistan warned that cross-border attacks could threaten "improving trust and cooperation" between the neighbours unless Pakistan addressed the issue.

Pakistan denies any official involvement in the incidents.

The latest shelling came shortly after the United States called on Pakistan to "break any link they have" with militants from the Haqqani network in border districts.

In response, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani rejected claims of Pakistani complicity with the Haqqanis and said that US policy on Afghanistan was in "disarray."

I think the 2 sides need to closely cooperate to root out these jahil animals, i am sure Pakistan was after the terrorists, and the same terrorsts are killing us afghans too. Good for p akistan to take fight on them, but they also MUST be careful about the damage they cause to the ordinary people, more cooperation from both sides can eliminate the enemy as well as protecting the civilians.

why not care? You see, you display the attitude towards us and when the americans show the same tihng to you, you get aggitated, good job for creating hatred.

Actually, it's the US that gets agitated, Pakistan has played it really cool.

If the US/ANA does not take action against the safe havens for terrorists that attack Pakistan from Kunar & Nuristan Afghanistan, Pakistan will.

working relationship must be established between the two armies to solve this outlaw problem once and for all, it can create misunderstandings between the two states...

Most of the terrorists happen to come from Afghanistan under the nose of NATO. All the smuggling of goods into Pakistan, and human trafficking is happening over there. RAW agents use the same route to enter Pakistan, and we have caught handful of them in disguise with Afghan ID cards ;). This means Afghan government is hand in hand with the Bharti agencies.

So we have to do it. As for this news, I just wished it to be true. But it isin't.
Remember when the ANA and NATO claimed Pakistan Army to fire over 700 rocket over night, how stupid was that of them?
They need to get attention, which no one is giving them.

and have you taken steps to root out safe heavens in paksitan?

because only of you people we are bearing this so called WOT.

Doing it with every breath we take. Killed around 30 yesterday. PAF F-16s striked too.
Militant hideouts were raided and artillery was used to destroy their hideouts/bunkers.
Around 30-80 militants are killed by the Pakistan's forces every month, on average. Two months ago, Pakistan started operation in Khurram agency, with over 200 killed in 3-4 weeks. We just keep on striking their places, as soon as we get the knowledge of confirmed presence, and the nearest mobile team is sent to finish em up. No one have given as much to WOT that Pakistan gave.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan defense officials are strongly warning Pakistan to stop firing rockets and heavy artillery into areas of northeast Afghanistan.

The Afghan Defense Ministry issued a statement Sunday accusing the Pakistani army of firing more than 300 artillery and rockets into Kunar and Nuristan provinces during the past five days.

The ministry says an unknown number of Afghan civilians have been killed and hundreds of people have been displaced from their homes.

If the shelling does not stop, the ministry says Afghanistan is ready to respond to the attacks.

There was no immediate comment from Pakistani officials.

Afghanistan warns Pakistan about border fighting

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) --

Afghan defense officials warned Pakistan on Sunday to stop firing rockets and heavy artillery into northeast of the country or the military will respond with force.

In its strongest condemnation to date, the Afghan Defense Ministry accused the Pakistani army of firing more than 300 artillery and rockets into Kunar and Nuristan provinces during the past five days.

The area is a haven for hardcore insurgent groups fighting in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. U.S.-led coalition forces have a light footprint in the area and the cross-border fighting highlights NATO's struggles to pacify the remote region and underscores the lack of cooperation between Afghanistan and Pakistan against their common foes.

The ministry said an unknown number of Afghan civilians have been killed by the shelling coming from Pakistani territory. Several houses and mosques have been destroyed and hundreds of people have been displaced from their homes, the ministry said.

"Once again, the Pakistani army started firing heavy artillery and rockets over innocent Afghan people from the other side of the Durand Line," the statement said, referring to the disputed 19th century demarcation between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

There was no immediate comment from Pakistani officials.

Pakistan complained earlier this summer that militants coming from Afghanistan killed at least 55 members of its security forces and tribal police and demanded that U.S. and Afghan forces do more to stem the flow of fighters.

Afghan defense officials said that according to their forces on the ground, more than 100 rockets or mortars rained down on the two provinces Saturday night.

"It's a clear attack on civilian residential areas," the ministry statement said.

"The Afghan Defense Ministry is strongly condemning the attack and is giving strong warnings that such violations (of sovereignty) will have their effect on the brotherly, friendly relations of two neighboring countries," the statement said. "There is no reason for continuing such attacks. The Pakistan government should know that Afghan National Army, with the support of the Afghan people, is ready to respond if such attacks continues." :argh:

Also in the east, the U.S.-led coalition said two NATO service members were killed Sunday in separate roadside bombings and a suicide bomber on a motorbike detonated explosives at a local police headquarters building, killing four people in Paktika province.

In the south, Afghan police shot and killed two men wearing explosives vests, foiling a planned suicide attack on a government building in Zabul province.

The deaths of two NATO service members raised to 442 the number of international troops killed in Afghanistan so far this year. The coalition did not disclose further details about their deaths.

The suicide attack in Paktika province occurred at the entrance to a local police headquarters building in Yahya Khel district. Two policemen and two civilians died in the attack, said Abdul Rahman, who heads a police coordination office in Paktika province.

"After the attack, gunmen fired bullets at the police headquarters from two or three directions, but the gunfire ended after 10 or 15 minutes and no other casualties were reported," Rahman said.

In the south, Afghan police shot dead two men wearing explosives vests, foiling a planned suicide attack on a government building in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province. The shots detonated the attackers' explosives and both died, according to the Ministry of Interior. Also in the south, a bus collided with a mini van just outside Kandahar city, killing eight Afghan civilians and wounding more than a dozen others.

In the capital Kabul, President Hamid Karzai met with his national security team and appointed a panel of high-ranking officials, led by Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak, to investigate the assassination of former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who headed the nation's peace council.

Karzai said Rabbani's death was a "big loss" and that greater security measures should be taken to protect top Afghan figures, including religious clerics and tribal leaders. Intelligence officials at the meeting said one person had been arrested in connection with the assassination and that authorities were close to ascertaining the details of the killing.

Yeah right. The Kabul ministry of defence is talking too much these days.

Mr. 'unknown' defence official, come out and see 70% of your country is under Taliban control. Please take care of that first.

Lmao Afghanis warning us. The last thing Afghanistan wants right now is for the border to be mined and fenced and the millions of these Afghani refs and illegals living in Pakistan to be kicked back to Afghanistan.

I think the GoA need to stop the tit for tat and stop critizing paistan, although the shelling of residential areas is worrisome, but that can be solved with talks. We are already fighing a heavy fight against the afghan/pakistani taliban in kunar/nuristan, and if paksitani pound these groups, then good.
