The US Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded Boeing's Insitu subsidiary a potential USD71 million contract to produce eight ScanEagle unmanned aerial systems (UASs) for Afghanistan, the DoD announced on 25 November.

The three-year deal covers 65 aerial vehicles, spares, support, and in-country training, according to the DoD announcement. Delivery is expected in June 2018.
The ScanEagle air vehicle is used for reconnaissance and features a predominantly cylindrical fuselage and shoulder-mounted sweptback wings. The system has been equipped with a range of sensor payloads.

This will not be the first time the ScanEagle is used in Afghanistan. In November 2012, Insitu received a one-year USD12 million DoD contract for land-based operations that formed part of Operation 'Enduring Freedom', so Afghan forces will already be familiar with the capability.
