A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and the Afghanistan government on Saturday to establish the Afghanistan Scholarship Programme (ASP).

LUMS Vice-Chancellor Dr Syed Sohail H Naqvi and Afghan Ambassador Janan Mosazai signed the document.

The ASP - announced by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani during his visit to Islamabad in November last year - is a merit-based initiative for the talented students of Afghanistan to study at LUMS in its graduate and undergraduate programs.

Mosazai said, “The arrival of Afghan students under the ASP in Punjab will also create a new people-to-people link between the two countries, thus strengthening the existing solid bonds of brotherhood and friendship between Afghanistan and Pakistan.”

He also said the LUMS model would be replicated in Afghanistan with the varsity’s support.

Naqvi said his university was planning to hold various marketing activities in Afghanistan to raise awareness about the programme, which would commence from the academic year 2015-2016. LUMS Pro-Chancellor Syed Babar Ali was also present on the occasion.
