Pakistan is one axis, the other is Turkey. Turkey has considerable influence in Central Asia and the US needs Turkish air bases and air space for a non-Russian/Russian Allied Northern route to Afghanistan, especially if Azerbaijan doesn’t allow the US overflight rights in conjunction with Turkey.
