Is there an alternative to standard disease diagnosis technologies? Israeli startup AEYE Health is thinking of presenting an alternative that will allow for the identification of various diseases in a timely manner - without expensive and advanced equipment. For two years, the company operated under the radar, and is now being disclosed with a $ 3 million investment receipt. She raised the funds from R-Cubed, Falcon, Israeli Club 100 and several Angels.

Professional examination by the GP
Diagnosis of the retina has been used by ophthalmologists since the mid-19th century. Analysis of the retinal condition allows to identify and diagnose a host of diseases, some of which may lead to blindness, but also diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and Alzheimer's. The problem is that retinal decoding requires diagnostics by doctors with specific training, and supply in this area is relatively limited. As a result, many may develop disease or develop blindness because of late tests.

The algorithm developed by Israeli AEYE Health is based on computer vision and machine learning to diagnose a host of diseases from retinal images. Thanks to the company's development, the need for specially trained ophthalmologists has been spared, and tests can also be performed at general practitioners, nurses and technicians. "Right now, the family doctor is unable to perform the test and he has to refer the patients to an ophthalmologist. The idea behind the product is to give a new tool to the family physician so that he can perform the test easily and simply in his clinic, "explains Gettickim Itzik Yitzhakov, the company's business development manager. If a disease is diagnosed as a result of the image analysis, the patient will be referred to an ophthalmologist for further treatment.

One software that fits all existing cameras
The company's development is a software solution, and the company does not develop the camera itself. The system's ability to interface with any camera to get the retina image, including a cheap, manual webcam that cost thousands of dollars, compared to competing solutions, which rely on large, cumbersome cameras that cost tens of thousands of dollars. AEYE Health is facing huge companies such as Google and IBM, but according to Yitzhakov, there is only one company with FDA approval to use such a system. However, he says her system is limited to identifying only one disease and is approved for working with a particular camera which is large and cumbersome. The photo operation is simple and unobtrusive, and the whole process, including uploading the images to the system, takes less than a minute.

AEYE Health was founded in 2018 by CEO Zack Debbie-Aaron - Machine Learning Specialist and Chief Operating Officer Danny Margalit, who co-founded Aladdin in 2009. The company currently employs 14 employees in its offices in Tel Aviv and New York.

The development is in the final stages of a clinical trial in the United States - a crucial step in the approval of the coveted FDA. At the same time, several family clinics and endocrinologists in the United States are already using the system. "FDA approval will allow us to market our technology commercially, which will make network testing much more accessible and save many, even millions, from blindness - which early treatment can completely prevent.
