ADECS 2019: Counter-BeiDou device helps defend Taiwan

With a focus on asymmetric warfare, the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) recently produced a portable counter-BeiDou device, a countermeasure to interfere with People’s Liberation Army (PLA) missile guidance systems.
Based on its experience of developing an EW system known as the Interception, Acquisition, Direction-Finding and Jamming Vehicle, the NCSIST has reduced and simplified this technology to a portable device able to be carried by an individual.
This Miniature Positioning Guidance Protector creates a countermeasure network to jam guided missiles that rely on satellite-based navigation systems. It employs synthetic-aperture radar countermeasure technology, and collocates with frequencies and parameters collected by the NCSIST.
With this system, the Republic of China Army can protect key locations such as C2 nodes.
The main function of the device is to misguide or interfere with military-grade satellite navigation systems, including GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou. The latter Chinese system is utilised on PLA missile guidance systems.
Taiwan has put in huge resources to build up its missile defences, with multiple batteries of I-HAWK, Tien Kung I/II/III and Patriot (PAC-2/PAC-3) missiles serving as the first defensive line. The Miniature Positioning Guidance Protector fills gaps by distracting missiles during their final approach.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense provided NTD50 million ($1.65 million) to complete the project.
The device was field-tested in 2018 and declared fully operational in early January. An unknown number of units have been distributed to the signals group in each army corps.
