New Delhi, February 13

A fully-refurbished World War II-era Dakota, belonging to the vintage of the iconic military transport aircraft that played a crucial role in the 1947 Indo-Pak War, is all set to be flown to India next month, to become a proud possession of the IAF.

The plane, which underwent a six-year-long restoration will join the vintage fleet at the Hindon Air Base in Uttar Pradesh.

The aircraft is a gift from Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekar to the India Air Force, and at a function held here today, the Bengaluru lawmaker ceremonially handed over the papers and deeds to Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa.

Hailing the qualities of the aircraft, the chief of Air Staff, said, “They were introduced in the 1930s... As part of the 12th Squadron of the then Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF), Dakotas were the main workhorse in Ladakh and Northeast region. And, they intervened in time to save the Valley of Kashmir (in 1947).

“Military historian Pushpindar Singh had said that Dakota is the reason why Poonch is still with us. They helped in hastening the fall of Dhaka and liberation of Bangladesh. And, in 2014, we had given a shell on the Dakota to the Bangladesh Air Force,” Dhanoa said.

Douglas DC3 aircraft, better known as the Dakota, carried the troops of the Army’s 1 Sikh Regiment to Srinagar on October 27, 1947, during the first Indo-Pak War, besides carrying supplies and refugees.

The Dakota, christened ‘Parashurama’, will bear the tail number VP 905, the same as the first such aircraft in the Indian service that transported the troops during the 1947 war to Jammu and Kashmir.

Chandrasekar’s gift will make it the first vintage Dakota for the IAF which currently has a Tiger Moth and a Harvard aircraft stationed at the Hindon Air Base. “The Dakota is currently kept at Coventry airfield in the UK. It is set to fly next month.

The vintage plane will traverse over 4,800 nautical miles. From the UK, the route will be through France, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Oman, in that order. In India, the first stop would be Jamnagar, from where it will fly to Hindon,” he told PTI on the sidelines.

According to a short film screened at the function, the aircraft was acquired from scrap and underwent six years of painstaking restoration in the UK, and the IAF had technically accepted it late last month.

The IAF has helped the MP in getting the aircraft registered and in upgrade of the navigation system.

“Since it has to fly through multiple foreign airspace, we helped them in getting permission,” the IAF chief said.

In his address, he had called the gifting of the Dakota to the IAF a “great gesture” for funding the acquisition, repair and eventual ferrying of the aircraft.

The MP said, “I acquired it around 2011 and this gift is a permanent way of honouring the men and their machines, who make us all proud today as a nation,” adding, “finding and restoring this bird was a huge challenge”.

Chandrasekhar’s father Air Commodore (retd) MK Chandrasekhar, who was present at the function, was a Dakota pilot in the IAF, and the lawmaker said, “The seeds were sown perhaps very young.”

“My father is 84 now. And, I grew up seeing him flying Dakota. So, my passion for planes is natural. And, it is on behalf of my father that this gift is being made to the IAF, in dedication to the air warriors. And, I hope it will inspire future air warriors,” he said. — PTI

Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force (IAF) Air Chief Marshal (ACM) B.S. Dhanoa on Tuesday received a restored World War-II DC3 Dakota aircraft from an IAF veteran.

“The Dakota [Dak] was also part of my childhood as my father flew it all over India and so today, I fulfil my dream of helping my father donate a DC3 Dakota to the Indian Air Force,” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, MP and son of Air Cdre (retd.), M.K. Chandrasekhar, a Dakota Pilot.

The gift deed was signed between ACM Dhanoa and Air Cdre (Retd) Chandrasekhar at a handover ceremony.

The DC3 Dakota aircraft Parashurama bearing the Tail Number VP-905 will be part of the IAF’s vintage fleet. This Tail Number is the same as that of the first Dakota aircraft that transported troops of 1 Sikh regiment to Srinagar on October 27, 1947 for operations in J&K in the first Indo-Pak war. On that day, three Dakotas of No. 12 Sqn took off at 5 a.m. from Wellingdon airfield (Safdarjung) in New Delhi for Srinagar. By the end of day, 28 Dakota sorties were flown, including six civilian sorties.

Dakota DC-3: Homebound to India

A Dakota DC-3 aircraft of 1940’s vintage would be inducted shortly in to the Vintage Aircraft Flight of the Indian Air Force. A large fleet of Dakota DC-3 served in the IAF till 1988. It was one of the most versatile transport aircraft of its time. To honour the first Dakota which transported troops of the 1st Sikh Regiment to Srinagar on 27 Oct 47, during the Kashmir conflict, the IAF has allocated the aircraft with a registration number. Built in 1944, the aircraft served in military and was also operated by various civil airlines.

The aircraft was obtained from scrap in 2011 and was restored to flying condition by Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar for gifting it to the IAF. Subsequently, the IAF signed a contract with M/s Reflight Airworks Ltd for upgrading its navigational systems. The CAS ceremonially accepted the aircraft into the IAF from Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar on 13 Feb 18.

After successfully completing all test flights, after its restoration, the aircraft commenced its journey on 17 Apr 18. It is being flown to India by a joint team crew of the IAF and M/s Reflight Airworks Ltd. The ferry to India by making en-route halts at France, Italy, Greece, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman, will be completed on 25 Apr 18 at Jamnagar.

To honour the old war horse in its new residence, the induction ceremony of Dakota VP-905 is scheduled on 04 May 18 at Air Force Station Hindan. The ceremony will include the representatives from the OEM, dignitaries from the High Commission and the proud veterans of the IAF who have operated this magnificent flying machine.

An aircraft of this generation being flown to India from across the World after its restoration, is an unprecedented event in the history of the IAF and joins our vintage flight which was raised in Palam in 1988. The Present day heritage aircraft in Vintage Flight are Howard and Tiger moth with plans afoot to add a wider variety of military aircraft which forms a part of our rich ancestry.
