See the reason I want to study is

  1. Good Education
  2. Courier business is 9 to 5... So I can spare time for studies during evening
  3. Nobody is here to keep an eye on me so I can also spare some time at weekdays (when not so busy)
  4. I have number of accountant friends and acquaintances around me... and if I do manage to pass the first year, I could probably work under their company (I know they won't refuse me for work experience)
I find both subjects equally interesting... If I go for BSc in Accounting & Finance, I get 9 exemptions from ACCA I believe (and I believe you have passed all the papers) ?

May be in future I can have my own office.... But in Business Management I can probably work under a large company but not sure how significant it is going to be for me as self-employed.
You can use business management in any facet of life. Whether you are working at a large corporation or running a business by yourself, you'll use some of the knowledge gained by your business management courses.

If its an undergrad degree in accounting that you're looking for; you can go for ACCA and after passing the first 9 papers write a thesis and submit it to the University of Oxford Brookes. Depending on whether you pass it....you can get an undergrad degree in Applied Accounting from them.

I would, however, strongly recommend against going for an undergrad degree in accounting and finance because it will add very little value in terms of making you a better businessman. Accounting and Finance is a highly specialized discipline that will pigeonhole you to 'accounting' and 'finance' alone. Learning how you're supposed to recognize a Finance Lease according to the International Accounting Standard 17 has its advantages but it will not accrue any tangible benefit to you in terms of imparting you better management skills to manage and hopefully grow your business.

A degree in Business Management on the other hand will introduce you to the various functions of management like HR, Marketing, Operations, Supply Chain and also Accounting and Finance - That, in my opinion, is a much....much better bet than going for a degree in Accounting and Finance because a Business Management degree will teach you the basics of all that you need to know to improve and grow your business alongside teaching you the basics of accounting and finance to know how to deal with the accounting and finance function of your organization.

Only go for an undergrad in Accounting and Finance if you wish to top that up with a Professional Accountancy qualification like ACCA/CIMA/ICAEW/ICAS etc. and then work either in public practice (audit and advisory firm) or work in a company's accounting and finance department.

Otherwise GO FOR BUSINESS MANAGEMENT !

So you believe HND in Business (HR Pathway) is a good course for me?

I will be left with open choice for Year 3 (top up course) to complete BSc in Business Management as that college is offering only 2 year's course

right... You have seriously made me consider sticking to HND in Business for now.. leading to BSc in business Management

I actually wanted to do ACCA couple of years ago,... still possess the expired student card from ACCA but the life just took me away... But I am not really sure if I would want to work under somebody for longer period of time in future as I plan to establish own business for long term goal... but as you said I will need to think about future now (whether to do Professional accountancy course or not) and will decide in accordance to that...

Thank you very much for your post, I have kinda tilted towards business management after reading your post.. may be the same college of Central London can offer me the same business management course... I will speak to them... as my local college is kind of unknown outside London but the school based in central London is known worldwide.

Have you looked at the University of London's External Programs ? You can study for them at your own pace ONLINE or get yourself enrolled at a partner institution.

You can check them here: Course search | University of London International Programmes

They've also got some Foundation programs.

There are number of distant courses available but the problem is... this way I don't pay attention to studies :(

I have previously tried to read the books on my own and after a month or two, I lost interest in it... I would usually leave it for tomorrow... so this habit of visiting a school on weekly basis will keep me gelled with books. On top of that, I will be paying like 6000 pounds per year so I would know that I have to extract every penny out of it..

You could visit one of their Affiliate Centers where that course is taught; you see how University of London's LLB program and others are taught at the University College Lahore. I'm sure there would be similar institutions within the UK which teach the University of London's International Degrees.

I am sure there would be affiliate centres but they will charge money for that... and as I explained earlier, I might be lazy to go to affiliate centre and keep leaving it for tomorrow (I am not a free person as you know, I got plenty of things to do so my priorities will be changed)

This habit of visiting a class room is the only option which will truly keep me gelled with the course... The only alternative is that you get lessons on video cam... and you know the class room environment is not like we have in Pakistan... You basically have to go to 4 evening per week for 3 hours and then come back and you have all the course material available on their website... so technically even if you don't attend the classes, I believe you can still prepare by reading the material on their website but they want you to come in and resolve all the problems you may have alongside a long and boring lecture of 3 hours...

Distant learning is a very good option for most people but students like me who has been away for 10 years is bit more shy to go that route as I might not feel right to bother my teachers via email on regular occasions... and as I said if I do manage to pass the first year, I might start working somewhere and leave the courier business for my partner to handle in my absence...

I did MBA(General) from Cardiff . You need to decide whether you want to study business management or accounting or HR.

Accounting : ACCA and you may also get free BSC degree in applied accounting from Oxford Brookes Univeristy

Management accounting : go for CIMA

If you are interested in HR= get any CIPD courses

If business study with some work experience : HND in business Administration which is equal to first two year of 4 year BSC degree (with honours). If you hold HND you will need to study two more years in university to get BSC degree

You should decide which is best option for you based on cost or duration of courses. I will personally recommend professional courses rather that just BSC or MBA degree

The problem with Professional course is, I cannot get student loan

But with academic qualifications I could at least cover my cost of education for the time being.

Professional courses are cheaper and are in more demands and their timing are also flexible.
Academic qualification will be expensive and will take long time to finish. Its difficult to manage academic qualification with full time work. Yea the advantage of student loan is there but well loan is loan so you have to repay once you start work

Its better to go for one particular subject and to read it in depth rather than just touching all subjects

I will not be getting full loan and intends pay off even before I start working...

You are right about that but I think I would like to get academic qualification for degree sake

Direct enrolment in professional course is also a very good idea but I would like to go academic route for this time

apni desi larkyaan yea sochti hain degree le lein rishta acha mil jahey ga :D I personally know many girls who just went for MA in Islamic study/history or economics just for sake of degree..ek ko tu degree kar b pata nhi that economics ha kia cheez :P

HND(higher national diploma) is good because it is work based education and full time BSC is long commitment so chose whatever suit you and good luck :)

It is not about academic qualifications, I googled it for like 1 full year and came to conclusion that despite the professional qualification is highly regarded for job opportunities, most companies prefers some sort of academic qualification alongside professional one.

So basically if I go now less preferred route of BSc (hons) in Account & Finance + ACCA --- I stand with better chance of obtaining a job instead of ACCA + getting BSc hons degree in applied accounting awarded by Oxford Brookes (without attending formal academic course) because 1) I have graduated from a better ranked university (companies highly prefer that) and 2) I can always pass ACCA exams after completing the academic education.

I think I have made my mind of attending the class from tomorrow (HND in Business HR Pathway) and see how it goes for a month before September classes of Accounting & Finance begins and if I like the course, I will stick to HND in Business for now
