Tokyo, Aug. 20 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been criticized for playing golf after he received on Wednesday morning the first report of mudslides in the western city of Hiroshima, where the death toll later exceeded 30.
Despite the initial report, Abe started a round of golf and continued the game for about an hour. His slow initial response shows how lax his administration has become, said Akihiro Ohata, secretary-general of the major opposition Democratic Party of Japan.
News of the mudslides reached Abe early in the morning when he was on holiday in Yamanashi Prefecture near Tokyo. At 6:30 a.m. (9:30 p.m. Tuesday GMT), he issued an instruction that the government would make every effort to deal with the disaster.
But he started the golf round as planned, shortly after 8 a.m. After new information was reported to Abe, he stopped the game around 9 a.m., rushed back to Tokyo and arrived at the prime minister's office around 11 a.m.
Without stopping, Abe went to the crisis management center in the basement of the prime minister's office and was briefed on the latest developments. After that, he told reporters that he decided to boost the number of Self-Defense Forces troops to be dispatched to the affected area to hundreds, in order to expand the rescue activities. Abe returned to Yamanashi Wednesday night.

 don't disturb his holiday
