Ghost cities are not only seen in apocalypse movies. They do exist and we can rarely get a glimpse of the ultimate silence in these places. Naypyidaw is one of them. Strangely, this ghost city became Burma’s capital a decade ago when the government announced it’s moving the capital from Rongoon for no obvious reason. Six times larger than the size of NYC, it barely has any population.

Burma is a country in Southeast Asia and has one of the strictest military regimes on the planet. It is therefore often compared to North Korea for its dictatorship. Naypyidaw, as its capital is housing one of the strictest military regimes in existence. Tourists are not allowed to enter the country.

You are not the only one who does not know about it. Even people in Burma have no idea about its existence, although it cost billions to build.

It was supposed to house millions of people, but now the metropolis is basically vacant. The only population in the city are the government workers you can see on the streets.

The Guardian visited this ghost town in the beginning of 2017 it earlier this year. This is how they described it: “an eerie picture of post-apocalypse suburban America; like a David Lynch film on location in North Korea.”

Can you believe the whole city has wifi? It is built in the middle of a jungle, and there are only a few people there, and no restaurant or hotels function. Well, at least someone is using the wifi.

The streets are huge, build to meet the every-day traffic jam. However, they are completely abandoned, as there are barely any vehicles.
5-186.jpg

There are rumors that Burma actually contacted technicians from North Korea to build underground tunnels underneath the deserted city. Surprisingly, Naypyidaw’s history is basically a mystery. No one knows when construction began, or exactly who built it. Doesn’t it make a good script for a movie?

Although it’s official that the population is 1 million, the photographs are telling another story. The only pedestrians are street cleaners, not knowing who they are cleaning for.

And in case you wondered what these few people feel like, travel writer Robert Reid has the answer. He went to Burma several years ago to seek out privately run services for Lonely Planet’s Myanmar (Burma) guide. He also made a stop in Naypyidaw where he spoke to locals. They anonymously revealed they felt like they were living in a video game.

Way better than over-crowded Dhaka if it had restaurants.
Probably build for the armed forces personnels.

It seems government has more extra money that have made such spacious roads where very few vehicles can be seen there... how much the cost would have to pay on repairing and maintaining it as per year... The money as would have been spent on the roads same would not back in taxes to the government... or may be these roads would be lead to the kingdom as usually have been seen in Pakistan, the area which lead to elite leaders is made the beautiful and its caring and maintaining is made regularly... if there is such sort of issue then i will say nothing...

Wow...such wide roads with so few cars and people.....'wish it were in India......but India's population is going to cross China's even though it is about 1/3 the size of China....:hitwall:
Indian population is increasing as with high average, one day you people will rule the world on basis of population... Then this world would be like the hell... :) because you people can just increase your population but cant learn the etiquette how to live in human beings... :hitwall:

Who paid for it? Does the Govt. pays the street cleaners? It seems like after few hundred years it will look like lost city of Cambodia!

I think if the roads are converted into formula1 circuit?....just thinking.

This world is already a hell because of Pakistani or Pakistani born terrorists creating mayhem everywhere. Thank god there are regular bomb blasts in Pakistan to keep your population in check.

Ur post on bomb blast is really in bad taste buddy. U dont need to get down to shameless levels like that Pakistani. Ignore and move on. Edit ur post.

this capital was constructed from the military point of view.
situated in the center of Myanmar. small to medium military plane can land most area of city in any emergency case. wholely protected by MIADS ( Myanmar Integrated Air Defence System ) which is supported by Russia and China and one Regional Military Command was founded as guardian of the city.
every important buildings in Nay Pyi Taw are constructed in prime location which can get max protection from both military and geological advantage.

Looks pretty OK but why no visitors?
the city is opened for visitors just a few year ago. even now there are many places which cannot access without permission. but tour promotion is starting to lure visitors from both local and foreign countries. bro

Who paid for it? Does the Govt. pays the street cleaners? It seems like after few hundred years it will look like lost city of Cambodia!

I think if the roads are converted into formula1 circuit?....just thinking.
lol yes. bro
that's why we start tour promotions to attract the visitors. :P

Ashok , why r u dragging India everywhere ?
You people can't think over India , even for a minute u can't stop thinking about us.But fortunately we never think about you as we Indians have no spare time left from making India a superpower. We dream of us like USA,Israel,Russia & Germany in the coming 10 years.
Sorry we don't have time to complete or even think about you!
I did not make your country but do this so called mr Ashok has the courage to name his own country ???

See the difference between these two countries and its people one is fearless and clever and the other one will just now start using slang and abusive language.
You people are shame for your country ?
Bharat mata ki Jai !
