Opposition parties are demanding accountability of PM Nawaz Sharif with special focus on the Panama leaks and the Government and Prime Minister are terming it as ' conspiracy ' against those who may have forgotten the time when PPP ruled the country for the second time then Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's Government (was at loggerheads with Establishment (Army, Judiciary, Bureaucracy, Press) and the present Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif was darling of Establishment making one shot after another at Benzair Bhutto’s Government.
The story that I'm going to share with to you today is an interesting one; it is just 20 years old. No hypothetical events, just plain – simple facts and truths.
To understand this story and one could go to the nearby library and search the archives of Pakistan newspapers.
It was the month of June in 1996 when the Pakistani nation through national newspapers got to know about Surrey Palace and Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s property in London.
Lets see how todays Prime Minister and then-opposition leader Nawaz Sharif was firing on all cylinders from June 10 to June 18 in 1996 from a high pedestal with steroids provided by the likes of Gen Aslam Beg, Asad Durrani and Hamid Gul - his fiery statements were as follows:
Prime Minister bought lavish property in London, what is the source of money? – Nawaz Sharif
Prime Minister does not have any property in UK, Incorrect News – Spokesman for PM (Benazir Bhutto)
Allegations of property in England are baseless – Benazir Bhutto
It’s not an allegation – it’s true that PM has property in UK – PM should answer in Parliament– Nawaz Sharif
Bring evidence re my property in UK – I will not answer in Parliament– Benazir Bhutto
Nawaz Sharif himself made billions in Cooperatives Scandal – Benazir’s counter attack
PM should not level allegations on us, rather go to courts in UK – Nawaz Sharif

To end corruption, Govt., proposes 6 member committee for terms of reference – Govt sources
The committee will have three members from opposition and three from Govt., - Govt Spokesman
Just replace the name of Nawaz Sharif and replace it with Imran Khan and where the name of Benazir Bhutto appears replace her name with Nawaz Sharif and enjoy the same show twenty years later in the same cinema named “Pakistan”.
Although Nawaz Sharif got to know about Surrey Palace on 10th June 1996 however his statements from May 25th, 1996 till June 9th, 1996 were very interesting as well:

Conduct referendum for creation of Ehtasab Commission – Nawaz Sharif writes to President Leghari
Everyone is sick and tired of corruption – People are with us – Nawaz Sharif

It’s interesting to note; that Nawaz Sharif has somehow got the wind of Surrey Palace just before the news was officially leaked. And now just take a look at few of “champions of democracy’s” statements before June 10th, 1996:
We have to get rid of corruption from our society – Shahbaz Sharif
Pakistan is on the verge of destruction – Benazir should step down – Ajmal Khattak
There will be war in a few days – Time has come to snatch the rights – Begum Nasim Wali Khan
To end corruption’s menace – Independent Commission should be formed immediately – Sartaj Aziz
In those days, Nawaz Sharif wrote two letters to President Farooq Leghari – first on June 2, and second on June 18, 1996 in which Referendum was demanded and was asked to play his constitutional role and dismiss the Govt., of PPP.
Let’s now see what happened after June 19 till June 30th, 1996 in most newspapers:
Out struggle is entering in its last phase – Nawaz Sharif – June 19th
Nawaz Sharif called for country wide strike on June 23
We will sell Surrey Palace and distribute proceeds amongst people of Pakistan – Nawaz Sharif – June 21st
Qazi Hussain Ahmed to stage Dharna on June 23rd on PM House
We support Qazi Hussain’s Dharna – Nawaz Sharif
Opposition is looking for bloodshed – Benazir Bhutto
Police in Rawalpindi – 3 killed – 80 injured
Opposition demands FIR against PM and Interior Minister
Govt., has started hooliganism – Local Body Officials should capture Govt., Offices – Nawaz Sharif
Judges have been offered positions in power by Nawaz Sharif – Benazir Bhutto – June 30th
It is evident that in 1996 Nawaz was playing to the tunes of then Establishment and was hand in glove in with them for destabilizing the Govt., of Benazir Bhutto based on news report.
Twenty years ago; the scandal started from Surrey Palace and those who wanted to usurp the rights were successful. Incidentally this time properties in question are again in UK; and this time accountability is being demanded as “across the board” - apparently neutral stance of Army, Semi Neutral Stance of Judiciary, but Pro PMLN stance of Large section of Press, and Bureaucracy is making things quite complex.
However; there will be nothing for awaam in this; both parties - Surrey Palace and Mayfair Apartment ones are "one" and will not let anyone disturb their peaceful sleep – so it is requested to all –
