A gunman opened fire on sheriff's deputies responding to a call in Colorado, killing one and wounding others before officers killed the assailant.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said five deputies and two civilians were also shot by the suspect. Deputies were responding to a “domestic disturbance” call, the law enforcement agency said.

“Suspect shot & believed to be dead & no longer a threat,” the office's Twitter account said.

Deputies were responding to a call of a domestic disturbance around 5.15 am local time at the Copper Canyon Apartments on County Line Road in Highlands Ranch - about 20 miles south of Denver - the Sheriff’s Office said.

A number of local police forces were on alert over the incident, while a SWAT team was said to be responding. A major road south of Denver was also shut down in the wake of the incident.

  Three of the injured were taken to Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colo., with injuries that were not critical, Linda Watson, a hospital spokeswoman, said in a telephone interview. She declined to say if the injured were civilians or members of law enforcement.
  
  Another four were taken to Littleton Adventist Hospital in Littleton, Colo., Alyssa Parker, a hospital spokeswoman, said in a telephone interview. In updating its Facebook page with the news of the deputy’s death, the Sheriff’s Office changed it profile image to a badge with a black band across it.

Lauren Lekander, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, said a SWAT team had responded.

The Sheriff’s Office said an emergency shelter for people displaced from their homes was opening at the East Ridge Recreation Center, which features meeting rooms and two gymnasiums, among other amenities.

A spokeswoman for the center, Jamie Noebel, said in a telephone interview that the center had received a “handful” of residents and was prepared to house people overnight if necessary.

“We just want to be that safe place,” she said.

The Denver office of the F.B.I. said on Twitter that it was monitoring the situation.

The Copper Canyon Apartments website describes its homes as some of the “friendliest apartments in Highlands Ranch,” minutes away from shopping, dining and entertainment in Denver.
