4. Origins of Suicide Attackers

Between 1 December 2015 and 30 November 2016, just 20 percent of IS’s suicide attackers – whether they were VBIED drivers, inghimas operatives, or HBIED bombers – were ‘foreign fighters’. Indeed, the vast majority were local to the region within which their operation took place (hence, they were mainly Iraqis or Syrians). It is not possible to determine whether the largest proportion of suicide attackers was from Iraq or Syria because, besides those that refer to their towns or cities of origin, there are three kunyas that could mean an individual was from these states – “al-‘Iraqi,” which denotes that a fighter is from Iraq, appeared in 182 cases; “al-Shami”, which denotes that they were Syrian, appeared in 104; and “al-Ansari,” which signifies that they were a local supporter of IS without detailing where they were from, appeared in 196. Both Iraqis and Syrians could use the “al-Ansari” kunya. Whatever the case, given the widespread belief that it is foreigners that make up the bulk of IS’s suicide cadres, these figures are striking indeed.

In total, 186 foreigners died as suicide operatives in the year in question. Fifteen were commemorated with the kunya “al-Muhajir,” which, similar to “al-Ansari,” indicates they were foreign but does not specify a country of origin. The remaining individuals – 86 percent of whom died as VBIED operators – hailed from 31 states. Most came from Tajikistan, followed by Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Tunisia, and Russia. Tajikistan’s presence at the top of this list is curious. Over the twelve months in question, significantly more Tajiks died in VBIED and inghimas operations in Syria and Iraq than any other foreign national. This figure is even more striking when considered on a per capita basis, and suggests that Tajiks were being singled out for use in suicide attacks at least in part because of their nationality.40 While a similar phenomenon appears to be the case with the other top-scoring states, the disproportionality of Tajikistan is strange indeed. It is beyond the scope of this paper to determine why this might be, but it is worth noting that the man currently rumoured to be IS’s highest military authority – Gulmurod Khalimov – is a Tajik national.41

I cannot copy the report directly but this is the most important data:

Figure X: Suicide Attacker Origin 01/12/15-30/11/16 (Iraq and Syria combined)

74% local, 20% foreign and 6% unidentified.

Figure XI: Attacker Origin - Syria 01/12/15-30/11/16

65% local Syrians, 22% foreign, 13% unidentified.

Figure XII: Attacker Origin - Iraq 01/12/15-30/11/16

77% local Iraqis, 19% foreign, 4% unidentified.

Fair to say that a few myths have been erased once and for all. Who would have known that supposed Sunni Persians (Tajiks) would be the most fierce foreign ISIS fighters in conflicts that take place far away from their lands and which do not involve their people or immediate security. And 7 Iranian citizens as well. Well, well, well. Somebody will make a fuss about this report very soon despite this source being neutral and being the most respected source (International Centre for Counter-Terrorism - The Hague) of its kind.

Also it's worth noticing that suicide bombing itself (at least in an Islamic/Muslim context) was first invented and sponsored by Pro-Wilayat al-Faqih Mullah (Iranian regime in case anyone is in doubt) regime groups.

For instance during the Afghan-Soviet War there was not a single suicide bombing attack despite more foreigners joining during those 8 years than foreigners joining ISIS.

1. The research is only about a certain period. Suicide attacks started already in 2003 in Iraq by Al-Qaeda.

2. All other researches show that saudis and tunisians are in top 2. For once saudis are now second in olymlics of terrorism.

3. No one ever denied that there were also Isis sunni fighters with Iranian nationality, Iranian media even mentioned their arrest and fights with groups related to them. They are from the minorities which your nation supports (jundullah etc).

4. Still the majority are from Jordan+Saudi+yemen+Emirates etc.

5. And lastly it's your culture, religion and ideology, it doesnt originate from persian or Iranian mind, neither do hindus and buddhists, sikhs, jainists or jews blow up themselves on regular basis between civilians.

1) 1 year is more than enough to have variable statistical data.

2) Which are those? I have seen none.

3) That's funny. ISIS has reported Iranian nationals blowing up from several ethnic groups, including Persians.

4) No, they are locals which is natural as suicide bombings is used as a military tactic by terrorist groups/guerrilla groups who do not have the inventory that conventional armies have.

5) Iranians basically invented suicide bombing in an Islamic/Muslim context and used this tactic on a large scale during the Iraq-Iran war. It is an Iranian invention and now Iranians (Tajiks) of all foreigners, pioneer this Iranian invention among all foreigners.

Not only that we have examples of 13 year old Iranian children blowing themselves up long before any Arabs did so as far back as 1980.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammad_Hossein_Fahmideh

Also this thread basically shatters the nonsense talk of Iranians never joining ISIS let alone blowing themselves up. If Iranians can be in the top 8 when Sunnis make up 10% of the Iranian population and take part in conflicts that are of an internal Iraqi and Syrian nature, one can only speculate how many extremists of the Shia lot there is. I mean Mullah-ruled Iran is a good example of this or the 1000's of Shia Iranian terrorists fighting in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere. But when you glorify suicide bombings on your national TV this might be the result.

Not only that much of the "Islamic" extremism in the Arab and Muslim world can be traced directly to the Iranian "Islamic" revolution and Iranians such as this guy below.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamāl_al-Dīn_al-Afghānī

Let's not forget Kurds who have probably committed more suicide bombings than anyone in the region's history and they have mostly done it believing in a communist ideology.

Saudis Dominate Among Suicide-Bombers
Numerous studies show that one nation dominates above all others as a steady source of jihadists: Saudi Arabia.

On 15 July 2007. the Los Angeles Times headlined from Baghdad «Saudis' Role in Iraq Insurgency Outlined: Sunni extremists from Saudi Arabia make up half the foreign fighters in Iraq, many suicide bombers, a U.S. official says».

Ned Parker reported there: «Although Bush administration officials have frequently lashed out at Syria and Iran, accusing it of helping insurgents and militias here, the largest number of foreign fighters and suicide bombers in Iraq come from a third neighbor, Saudi Arabia, according to a senior U.S. military officer and Iraqi lawmakers. About 45% of all foreign militants targeting U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians and security forces are from Saudi Arabia; 15% are from Syria and Lebanon; and 10% are from North Africa, according to official U.S. military figures made available to The Times by the senior officer. Nearly half of the 135 foreigners in U.S. detention facilities in Iraq are Saudis, he said».

A December 2007 study by West Point Military Academy, «Al-Qa’ida’s Foreign Fighters in Iraq», found that, "Saudi Arabia was by far the most common nationality of the fighters’ in this sample; 41% (244) of the 595 records that included the fighter’s nationality indicated they were of Saudi Arabian origin». Almost half of those 41% came from two cities: Riyadh, the political capital; and Mecca, the religious capital. 56% of jihadist recruits were assigned to be «suicide bombers»; 42% were assigned to be «fighters».

This study also summarized the findings by earlier studies, most of which had found likewise that Saudi Arabia was by far the champion source, such as a 2005 Israeli study by Reuven Paz, which examined Iraqi jihadist websites during a two-month period, and found 154 ‘martyrs’ celebrated, of whom 61% were Saudis.

Anyone can write articles about anything, especially claims that date back 10 years and involve 65 people according to this source, but where is the original source and hard data and evidence? You can find similar articles claiming many different things.

Do you have a source even remotely as accurate or respectable or neutral as the one I provided in this thread? Those it hurt that the propaganda that many pro-Mullah Iranian users here have spread for years of there never being any extremist Iranians joining ISIS, hurt so much?

Are you proud of the fact that 8 million Sunnis (non-Arabs and not part of the conflicts directly) have provided more suicide bombers for ISIS than Saudi Arabians and almost every other people on the list per capita in both Syria and Iraq? You might not know this but most people in KSA who joined those extremist groups had ancestral/tribal ties across the border and saw it as their obligation to join and defend their brothers. That they were brainwashed is another thing.

Also it is no surprise that foreign Arabs are involved in conflicts of this complexity in fellow Arab countries, moreover neighboring ones. Nor does anyone deny this and it is well-known. However it is time to highlight the role of Iranians in this which has been largely ignored and which your likes pretend do not exist.

What is the excuse of Iranians and Tajiks for instance other than religious extremism? There is none.

Also while you are at it can you tell us all how many 1000's of Iranians who have joined Shia extremist/terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq and how many have died? Dozens of high-ranking Iranian generals alone have died.

Why is the Iranian government sending 1000's of impoverished and brainwashed Afghans and Pakistanis to Syria?

https://www.hrw.org/news/2016/01/29/iran-sending-thousands-afghans-fight-syria

No comment. Or no comment about who the regime/groups where who actually invented suiciide bombings in an Islamic/Muslim context. Iranians and your beloved regime is the answer but you want to pretend otherwise. Similar to how you want to pretend that there are no/have been no Iranians joining ISIS. Sorry, your bubble has burst now. You are now left pointing fingers and saying "well you guys have your own extremists too". True, nobody denied that unlike you "holy" guys.

Super desperate attempt to indicate that Saudis still are not flocking different terror groups in ME in thousands, ISIS included. Understandable, if citizens of my country also joined terrorists in thousands, I would try to change that perception.

My post number 6 is particularly aimed at those type of Iranians who pretend/try to fool people here that among their 8 million Sunnis or so, there have been no extremists joining ISIS or like-minded groups inside or outside of Iran because Iranians are somehow "oh so tolerant people or whatever bullshit we here - totally contrary to the ground realities in Iran or the international rankings of Iran on those fronts), while the hardcore data shows such Iranians to be among the largest group per capita in the world. Let us not even forget the 1000's of Iranians of the Shia variety who currently commit terror and fight for numerous of Iranian-sponsored terrorist groups in Syria and Iran. In fact if we look at both groups combined, I believe that only local Iraqis and Syrians (no surprise as the conflicts occur in their lands among their people) can beat Iranians in terms of numbers, both sides, combined.

Also no word about who actually invented suicide bombings in an "Islamic/Muslim" context or who supported such groups who used suicide bombings as a weapon and continue to support them to this very day almost 40 years after.

As for Saudi Arabians, around 2500 have joined the fighting in Iraq and Syria combined. This is practically nothing considering 25 million natives and those conflicts being Arab conflicts next door and where the element of familial/tribal relationship and regional war is added into the picture. I would be more worried if I saw 100's of Saudi Arabians joining Muslim hotspots in Nigeria, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkestan, Uzbekistan, Caucasus, Southern Philippines, Sahel, Northern Africa, Somalia etc. but that is not the case.

Moreover the core of this is, that no Arab has pretended that there is not a tiny, tiny, microscopic in fact in the wider picture number of Arabs, who have joined terrorist groups and who commit terror. It's about high time that Iranians do the same as everything points to that being equally as relevant. However, as I wrote before, they will pretend that they are Switzerland and Swiss people.

Who said there has been no terrorists among Iranians Sunnis? But even them are influenced by the virus that Saudis have spread in region, the same virus that created and nurtured AQ, Taliban, ISIS etc.

Hillary In Leaked Email: Saudi Arabia And Qatar Are Funding ISIS

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton sent an email to her campaign chairman John Podesta in 2014, who was then-counselor to President Barack Obama, that said Saudi Arabia and Qatar are both giving financial and logistical support to the Islamic State and other extremist Sunni groups, according to a recent Wikileaks release.

Are you talking about the Safavids who are regarded as national heroes by most Iranians and who committed several religiously-motivated genocides against the people of Iran and Iraq? I know of no Muslim dynasty that has done anything remotely similar to this below.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safavid_conversion_of_Iran_to_Shia_Islam

Or are you talking about the Iranian Mullah's who are actually a bunch of terrorists who rule an entire country and their Wilayat al-Faqih ideology, support of terrorist groups across the world etc?

Or is the "Islamic" Revolution that gave rise to modern-day terrorism in the Muslim world and has served and continue to serve as an inspiration for terrorist groups and how to gain power?

Wahhabi sack of Karbala

The Wahhabi sack of Karbala occurred on 21 April 1802 (1216 Hijri) (1801), under the rule of Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad the second ruler of the First Saudi State. Approximately 12,000 Wahhabis from Najd attacked the city of Karbala. The attack coincided with the anniversary of Ghadir Khum event, or 10th Muharram.

Wahhabis killed 2,000–5,000 of the inhabitants and plundered the tomb of Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of Muhammad and son of Ali ibn Abi Talib, and destroyed its dome, seizing a large quantity of spoils, including gold, Persian carpets, money, pearls, and guns that had accumulated in the tomb, most of them donations. The attack lasted for eight hours, after which the Wahhabis left the city with more than 4,000 camels carrying their plunder.

This account is disputed (in case you don't know) and occurred when no KSA or Iraq existed. It was a part of internal Arab conflict among the Arab tribes of Southern Iraq and Najd. Basically the same tribes fighting over power and using sect as an excuse.

Moreover and most importantly nobody in KSA is hailing this (if it occurred as described).

In return the Safavids, who are seen as national heroes in Iran, despite committing numerous massacres and genocides on a much, much larger scale, are UNIVERSALLY seen as Iranian heroes despite being more extremist.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safavid_conversion_of_Iran_to_Shia_Islam#Methods_of_converting_Iran

You can ask yourself what it must have taken to mass-convert a majority Sunni Muslim nation (a proud one moreover) overnight (more or less) into another sect that was very uncommon in Iran.

Iran’s population was mostly Sunni of the Shafi`i[3] and Hanafi legal rites until the triumph of the Safavids (who had initially been Shafi`i Sufis themselves).[4] Ironically, this was to the extent that up until the end of the 15th century the Ottoman Empire (the most powerful and prominent Sunni state and future arch-enemy of the Shia Safavids) used to send many of its Ulema (Islamic scholars) to Iran to further their education in Sunni Islam, due to a lack of Madrasahs (Islamic schools) within the Empire itself.[5]The Sunni Iranians had always held the family of Muhammad in high esteem.[6] In contrast, before the Safavid period, a minority of Iranians were Shia and there had been relatively few Shia Ulema in Iran.[7]

Ismail I or Shah Esmail

Shah Ismail I, the Sheikh of the SafaviyyaTariqa, the founder of Safavid Dynasty of Iran, and the Commander-in-chief of the KizilbashArmies of the Safavid Empire.
From 1500–2 Ismail I conquered Tabriz in Iran, as well as Armenia, Azerbaijan, and parts of Dagestan (North Caucasus, nowadays part of Russia). He would take most of the next decade to consolidate his control over Iran, where most of the Persian population was still Sunni. His army spread out first to the central regions in 1504. He captured southwestern Iran between 1505 and 1508 before finally conquering the Khorasan region and the city of Herat in 1510.[8] From the very beginning, the Safavid Dynasty was established on two foundations. One was Shia and the other was Persia, and Ismail concentrated more on the first than the second. His hatred of the Sunnis knew no bounds: he was the most intolerant Shia ruler since the fall of the Fatimids and his persecution of Sunnis was ruthless. He aimed at no less than the complete destruction of Sunnism.[9] Thus, the alternative for the majority of the Persians (who were Sunnis at the time), was either convert to Shiism or accept death.[10] Consequently, in the territory that came fully under his control, he was astonishingly successful in enforcing the conversion of the populace from Sunnism to Shiism.

Iranians here and elsewhere often use this guys profile picture. That's basically Al-Baghdadi of the Middle Ages on steroids just an even bigger murderer and maniac. Not only did he kill 1000's of Iranians, this maniac did the same thing in modern-day Iraq (Baghdad) and elsewhere.

It's good to see you are admitting to genocide of Shias by Saudis. We had a good progress today.

Are you talking about the Safavids who are regarded as national heroes by most Iranians and who committed several religiously-motivated genocides against the people of Iran and Iraq? I know of no Muslim dynasty that has done anything remotely similar to this below.

The whole existence of Salafi terrorism is defined by Saudi Arabia, ISIS is its most illegitimate son. No need to write a novel of nonsense to get away from the main topic.
