What's new

A Day on Orange Line Metro Train Lahore

Project built by 5 Billion Dollar loan , which was taken when the currency was 99 rupees for 1 Dollar
after the Sharif Badmash Brothers left , currency was down 150 for 1 Dollar , so that Loan is now
8-9 billion Dollar

It is yet to be seen how this project will make money

A simple Bus Network would be worked as well

It is a good project but since it is based on a Loan it has lost some of it's appeal

The Loans will be paid 100% by Pakistan's GDP and year to year income , Sharif Brother did not use their own money

Asset is owned by Pakistan 100%

99.9 % of all public transport systems in the world require a subsidy from the government.
The sole aim should be to reduce private vehicles on roads. Efficient societies like Japan, Singapore, etc rely heavily on public transportation.

Not really , Developed country's Subway and Bus System makes Millions per day (In Dollar)
Only countries that don't have proper prices or proper tracking of assets struggle to collect real $$$ figure from project

The current claim by Punjab authorities of no profit from Mass Transit is just example of not properly tracking the resources or setting the correct price for the Train

"SUBSIDY" is only prevalent in Pakistan
We have to cut that Ambilocal Chord

If you don't have money to pay for Train , Walk or Ride a Horse

This Orange Metro was not the need of the hour, there were other more important contingencies and other priorities.

India is doing the same thing, with Metros, Hyderabad Metro India has just 2% of the population using it.

A large fleet of public buses with a robust maintenance and admin. would have been more beneficial as there would have been huge savings as no infra, elevated tracks, viaducts needed. The already built road infra was good in Lahore and Karachi.

Also that would have been more accessible to older people and women...
Like 5-8000 medium size Buses would have been good for Lahore.

More buses means less traffic and no need for adding extra lanes, more green area and walking, cycling tracks.

Read the difference between operating profit and net profit. Net has all negative cash flows including interest and loan repayments included.
Trick is to construct it in a high use high density area rather than a convenient area.
Hyderabad example above is true to a extent but unfortunately this metro was prevented from construction in the most crowded areas due to politics by MIM. Now these clowns want the metro. But alignment is now changed. Read the history of Hyderabad metro in skyscrapercity and the political issues it faced., especially the route.
Just checked the ridership in hyderabad metro and its reached 4.6 lakhs per day , ie 7 % of the city's population.
And the network is expanding.

This Lahore Orange line Metro is constructed in a crowded, low income area starting from Dera Gujjran, north east Lahore...and most of the route is crowded and low income area.

But the Metro footfall of traffic is mostly office goers, who uses it twice daily, the school and college, univ. students, there is a University at the route and this is good. So the area is congested but I am afraid there are not too many office goers and students here...as most of the area has small shops and garages, small factories with labor class.

The other end, the south West has more public buildings and large commercial district.

Also the blanket fare of Rs. 40 for all the stations is wrong. Like three, four different fares would have attracted more passengers for smaller route of say 5kms, 8-10 kms. Now shorter route passengers will avoid it as they have to pay the same amount who avail the full 27 kms. And it means less boarding and exiting passengers, and less footfall, this simple thing was ignored by the authorities.

If you want badly utilized metro examples in India, Chennai and jaipur are the prime examples. But India has the money , just not the brains to utilize it properly. Pakistan has a resource issue.
Karachi needs a extensive transportation system. Whether the overground locals type in Mumbai or the delhi type of modern metro of 400 km. Both are roaring successes.

Check this Lahore Colonial Area...there is a route planned too but due to the area being high end and big biz, this route was not started as it requires excavations and chaos. And the idea was to get it done in a less privileged area to gain the experience.

If delhi metro can be constructed in old delhi , chandni chowk , etc , with minimum disturbance, Pakistan with its lesser density is not a problem. Just get good consultants like the Japanese. Delhi metro had consultants from 10 different countries including Japan, hong kong, uk, etc. , when it started construction in 1998.

Public transport systems aren't meant to make profit for the government, they are only there to help the citizens.

No , Public Transport world wide make money

> 4-5 Million people travel on City Transport
> Other countries Transport is maintained by City , so they make 4-5 Million dollar per day ($1 Ticket )
> The realistic price now for Transport is $5-$12 per traveler so the daily Money Made is even high

The Idea that you can't make money from Transport is False just means , the authorities are incompotent who can't make money

Bus/Train Transport Sector = Mega Money Maker for City
Tickets for Illegal Parking = Mega Money
Traffic Tickets for Violations = Mega Money
Parking Pass for City Parking = Mega Money

Lahore/Karachi like cities are Mega Cities , 14-20 Million People Travel 2 Direction daily that is 14-15 Million Dollar that can be collected from Transport Daily

Just because it says "PUBLIC" it does not means it is garbage

  • Public School
  • Public Hospital
  • Public Transport
