‘Clinton saved Nawaz Sharif from Mush’s noose’

Islamabad/Washington: In a report that could stir a political controversy in Pakistan, a newspaper report has said that former US president Bill Clinton saved Pakistan’s deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif from being hanged by the Musharraf regime.
In the report from Washington quoting unnamed officials who served in the Clinton administration, Pakistani newspaper the Daily Times said Clinton had “serious apprehensions about the life and safety” of Sharif and was “afraid that those who had overthrown him might also hang him”.
The sources said Clinton had expressed his concerns to the Saudi royal house, and had asked that it intervene with Musharraf to set free Sharif who had been charged with a range of “grave crimes”. Analysts have pointed to similarities between the post-October 1999 coup scenario and former PM ZA Bhutto’s fate who was hanged after arrest and trial by the regime of Zia-ul Haq.
The Clinton administration officials said the former president “did not want to take up the matter oneon-one with the new Pakistani military leader, and neither was Clinton initially willing to go to Pakistan because of the coup”. They said that the Saudi royal house had interceded and urged Clinton not to leave out Pakistan when he visited India in 2000. Clinton agreed in the end but kept the visit short. IANS

When you intentionally hurt your country. You should be killed. Considering you were the freaking leader.

That was Musharaf's version. But Nawaz was elected by public mandate.
I think there was no one to save Bhutto.

We should wait and see, Musharaf has so far been succesful in Maintianing his seat due to Army's support.
One should wait till he relinquishes his posts either Presidential, Army or both.

There were no other options but Nawaz, and blind people supported him. Nawaz did good in the beginning, did get some hype after the nuclear test, but indirectly we all know what he was doing.

Was Nawaz allowed to prove his version, Normally in most of the situation when there is a army coup the existing civilian govt is blamed for everything. I think Musharf took his venegance personaly with Nawaz because Nawaz tried to Block his landing.

I do not know scandals by Nawaz. But that should not attract death penalty.
There have been much more serious allegations against many of the world leaders.

Modern day democracy isn't about killing opponents or those who hold different views or in one's view have done something wrong. A fair trial is their fundamental right.

However, Nawaz Sharif had struck a deal with Musharraf of his own free will to go to Saudi Arabia in exile. He must now respect that and not even think about coming to Pakistan before the duration stipulated in that agreement.

As far as I know Nawaz was sure to get hanged, But for some last minute deal( Not exactly last minute ;) )and pressure from US and Saudis did provide refuge to Nawaz, Musharaf agreed only after Saudis put stricter restriction on Nawaz.
