The number of unemployed youths in the country has increased to 2.6 million, having an equal ratio from men and women.

The total number of unemployed people of the country was 2.59 million in 2013.

This scenario of country’s employment situation came up in the tri-monthly employment survey report of the 2015-16 fiscal of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

The BBS released the survey report on Sunday at a discussion meeting at its Agargaon office in the capital.

The BBS survey said this number has been fixed as per the labour standard of the International Labour Organisation's (ILO).

According to the ILO, a youth will be considered unemployed if he or she does not get at least one-hour work a day.

The BBS survey said the unemployment rate is higher among the youths with higher education as nine out of 100 graduates and undergraduates are now without job in the country.

Compared to the educated persons, those who do not have any formal education are more advanced in getting the job as the unemployment rate is much lower among them. The survey report shows that 2.2 per cent uneducated people are jobless.

The study also said as much 10 per cent of those who are aged from 15 to 24 are currently unemployed.

It further shows that the number of employed people in the country is now 59.5 million while it was 58.1 million in 2013.

As many as 1.4 million people got jobs between January 2014 and July 2015, it added.

Professor of economics at Dhaka University Barkat-e-Khoda and research director at Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) Rushidan Islam Rahman took part in the discussion on the survey findings.

Barkat-e-Khoda said at least one million youths enter job market every year.

Rushidan Islam said woman’s participation in the job market has increased in past few years, but the number is still not satisfactory.

Despite the rise, the number of female employees is one-third of the total jobholders, she added.

This makes the case for doubling our present efforts to attract good paying jobs in displaced manufacturing which is too expensive to do in China. Same for Japanese and Korean displaced jobs in manufacturing of small home electrics, toys, shoes and electronics.

Bangladesh should also intensify present efforts to contact foreign missions in Europe and the US in attracting sunset industries of any type from these countries.

The reason higher educated youth are unemployed is because we have mainly failed to replicate IT back-office jobs unlike in neighboring countries.

IT exports are increasing but Govt. needs to provide far more attractive incentives in this regard. The IT Parks being built around the country will help but I doubt the overseas marketing impetus to attract Bangladesh as an IT destination is sufficient at this time. This needs to be stepped up.

In addition - govt. has also failed to promote Pharma sector in spite of getting permission to produce patented medicine until 2030.

Nope wont happen. We have internal priorities to sort out well before we can try help anyone else....be it IT, Pharma or anything else.

No export-related industry assistance will be offered in any major way....and BD does not have the money to force the matter either (looking at FDI BD is able to invest). Forget about it.
