INS Dega, the naval air station of Indian Navy, is all set to buzz with activity as nearly 90 Indian Naval aircraft are all set to operate from the air station to present a fly-past and an operational demonstration, during the International Fleet Review 2016 (IFR-16). Several aircraft have already arrived and begun their rehearsals enthralling public through their manoeuvres on the Beach Road of the city.

IFR-16 will see an aviation extravaganza with close to 90 Naval aircraft operating from INS Dega to put up a spectacular flypast and operational demonstration showcasing the might of the Indian Navy’s air arm. Besides being operational base for the naval aircraft, the air station will also serve for the arrival and departure of flights carrying the delegates, including the President and the Prime Minister in Visakhapatnam during the IFR. The security at the Air Station has also been beefed up in coordination with the Airport Authority of India, CISF, CRPF, the state police and the state administration.

The flypast is scheduled on February 6 at RK Beach where President Pranab Mukherjee will review the International Fleet with fighters, maritime reconnaissance patrol aircraft and helicopters of Naval Air Arm. The flypast will comprise 15 formations, including two formations of Indian Coast Guard. This will display the latest acquisitions of Indian Navy which include the MiG 29K fighters, Hawk MK 132 advanced jet trainers, long range maritime reconnaissance aircraft P-8I Poseidon, Airborne Early Warning KM-31 helicopters along with other aircraft like Sea Harriers, IL-36, medium range reconnaissance aircraft Dornier-228, ALH, Seaking 42B/C, UH3H and Chetak helicopters. A scintillating helobatics display by helicopters and also an air combat manoeuvres by Hawk MK 132 AJT aircraft are all set to mesmerise the spectators.

A similar display is scheduled on February 7, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will witness the Operational Air power of the Indian Navy during the Operational Demonstration (Op Demo) and International City Parade on the Beach road. The Op Demo will comprise a flypast by the helicopters while aerobatics and combat manoeuvres by fighter aircraft, including a bomb burst manoeuvre followed by air combat manoeuvring by Hawk Mk 132 aircraft.

The Indian Navy will have its two operational aircraft carriers, INS Viraat and INS Vikramaditya, for display launch and recovery of Sea Harrier and MiG 29K aircraft respectively. A Sea Harrier hover demo, aerobatics by MiG 29K, armament demo comprising rocket firing by Hawk and MiG 29K comprises other demonstrations planned during the event. The event will culminate with precision combat freefall drops of Marine Commandos (MARCOS) by Seaking 42C aircraft in which the first MARCOS will present the Prime Minister with the official IFR-16 Indian Heritage Book.

Minimum Disruption

Civil flight operations will be restricted for limited hours from Visakhapatnam international airport and all efforts were made to ensure minimum disruption to the civil flights in the wake of unprecedented congregation of military aircraft at the air station. “The Director-General of Civil Aviation, Airport Authority of India as well as all the flight operators were informed in advance and necessary arrangements were made by altering the flight timings to a minimum extent. The flight operators have made flight bookings available for the air travellers according to the changed timings which came into force on Wednesday itself. The flight operators will revert to original timings from February 8.
