The Sindh Police, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and deputy commissioner South will join hands to install 9,000 surveillance cameras in markets and industrial estates of the city, said the city commissioner on Monday.
The decision has been taken to prevent extortion, street crimes and other incidents of lawlessness against traders.
Talking with a delegation of Sindh Tajir Ittehad, Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi said live feed from the new security cameras would be monitored at the KMCs central command and control system as well as in the control room of theSindh Police. He said the proposed CCTV cameras would be used for preventing extortion and other incidents of lawlessness against traders and vendors doing their business in major markets of the city. He said monitoring live feed of CCTV cameras would aid in alerting police in mobile vans and pickets near market centres.
He also said traders were being issued arms licences through their representative associations to ensure their safety.
Installation of CCTV cameras will be used to alleviate the requirement of stationing police personnel at market and business centres, he added.
A proposal for constituting peace committees at every market under the supervision of police officials concerned, or the deputy or assistant commissioner of the area, also came under discussion in the meeting.
