The Sindh Police, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and deputy commissioner South will join hands to install 9,000 surveillance cameras in markets and industrial estates of the city, said the city commissioner on Monday.

The decision has been taken to prevent extortion, street crimes and other incidents of lawlessness against traders.

Talking with a delegation of Sindh Tajir Ittehad, Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi said live feed from the new security cameras would be monitored at the KMC’s central command and control system as well as in the control room of theSindh Police. He said the proposed CCTV cameras would be used for preventing extortion and other incidents of lawlessness against traders and vendors doing their business in major markets of the city. He said monitoring live feed of CCTV cameras would aid in alerting police in mobile vans and pickets near market centres.

He also said traders were being issued arms licences through their representative associations to ensure their safety.

Installation of CCTV cameras will be used to alleviate the requirement of stationing police personnel at market and business centres, he added.

A proposal for constituting peace committees at every market under the supervision of police officials concerned, or the deputy or assistant commissioner of the area, also came under discussion in the meeting.

We already have CCTV systems. Adding 9000 will definitely add to the existing capacity.

However a much better solution is to put 2 to 3 drones 24 hours 7 days above the city. This will greatly enhance our ability to catch the bad guys.

This reminds me of a certain movie... can't put my hand on the name. But yes, this would be a good opportunity for Pakistan to test the small amount of surveillance drones it has.

there is no use, because the system is not connected to the police, police has refused to take any actions based on CCTV footage

mustafa kamal tried to link them together but failed, police too corrupt

this is because most of the crimes are done in complete awareness of the karachi police

Legislation must be made to penalize wrong use of CCTV cams.
Or as usual, they will be used to spy on hot girls instead of criminals.
We like to miss use just about everything.

Then 9000 cameras will produce over two hundred thosand hours of footage everyday, and analyzing it will require lots of man and computer power.
Police alone cant do this...

this is interesting

Like in India, 90% of these cameras will become non functional within two weeks!! :P

Atleast not in Bangalore. Don't fool yourself, initially people ignored the cameras and did not take them seriously, but then they started getting traffic tickets by the loads. And make no mistake, those CCTVs are in use, and you are being observed.

Big money. the cameras will disappear from every Ghunda locality in Karachi
