Last week’s suicide bombing attack at Wagah, the main land border crossing between India and Pakistan, which killed 60 and injured many more also turned the global spotlight on the unusual ceremony that soldiers of the neighbouring countries carry out everyday.

Technically a ritual “lowering of the flags,” the well-attended daily event begins with a parade accompanied by loud music and dancing on both ends. Following this, the soldiers – India’s Border Security Force and the Pakistani Rangers – prance and strut about with exaggerated goose-stepping, stamping and gesturing in a manner that is meant to look intimidating. The soldiers then salute each other, carry out one brusque handshake, and slam the gates shut with as much animosity as the metal structures can take.

The ceremony has often been criticised for being needlessly aggressive and jingoistic, and in 2010 both sides initially agreed to tone down the high-kicking and stamping that reportedly was also causing leg injuries to the soldiers. Pakistan, however, later insisted it wouldn’t make any changes to the ceremony and so the almost comical goose-stepping continues on both sides to this day.

The good people over at reddit, one of the internet’s most popular community sites, decided they would give this ceremony the treatment it deserves. One user announced a PSbattle, which is basically a competition to see who can offer the best photoshopped version of the ceremony.

The results are hilarious.

TheBlazingPhoenix decided to go Greek with one attempt.

facklestix added a spot-on Monty Python reference, while cleverly putting the Brit in the middle

Danirama, meanwhile, went with some subtle commentary.

While bgibgi shed the subtlety saying, "it is the opposite of peace."
