61st National Day for China – Today

Exactly 61 years ago on October 1, 1949 the Chinese Revolution triumphed under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. It marked the end of the revolutionary wave that swept across the globe following the Second World War. It brought one third of humanity under socialism.

Much water has flowed under the bridge since then and now. At that time even the protagonists of the revolution or its legendary leader Mao Zedong would not have dreamed that 60 years from then China or the Peoples’ Republic of China would earn a pre-eminent position in the world. Today China has the second largest economy in the world. It would become the first within a decade or so. Besides China has been developing at an unprecedented rate of 10 percent for the last three decades, an unparalleled achievement.

There are many alarmed at the growing might of the PRC. However, China has never displayed hegemonist ambitions. Rather it has been pursuing a peaceful foreign policy based on the principles of Panchaseela and non-interference in others internal affairs.

Today China is fully integrated to the world economy and it has become a power in geo-politics of the contemporary epoch. It is cooperating in diverse economic, political and security groupings.

Best Wishes from Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka and China has a century-old relationship that extends even to the time of traveller monk Fa-Hsien. Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to recognize the PRC. The Rubber-Rice Pact of 1952 stands as a historic landmark in our relations. However, it is the people’s victory in 1956 that laid the basis for the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries.

Right now, under the administration of President Mahinda Rajapaksa these relations have developed to an unprecedented level. China has become the largest donor for Sri Lanka. It is associated with most of the major development projects.
