$55m deal with US Exim Bank to 'power PIA into the future'
DAWN.COM | MATEEN HAIDER

ISLAMABAD: United States Export-Import (Exim) Bank has agreed to provide $55 million funding to Pakistan for the refurbishment of Pakistan International Airlines' (PIA) Boeing aircraft engines by American company General Electric (GE).

The $55 million deal ─ Exim's largest financing activity in Pakistan since 2006 ─ will pay for the refurbishment of PIA's ageing Boeing 777 fleet by US conglomerate GE.

The deal is expected to enhance overall engine performance of the domestic carrier's Boeing aircraft.

The signing ceremony on Wednesday between GE and PIA was witnessed by US Ambassador Richard Olson, Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar, Chairman of the Board of Investment Dr. Miftah Ismail, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Captain Shujaat Azim, and Vice-Chairman GE John G. Rice, among others.

Ambassador Olson said, “Today, GE and its joint venture engines power more than 60 per cent of PIA’s aircraft, and this deal to refurbish many of those engines will power PIA well into the future," adding that such a partnership could go a long way towards connecting Pakistan with the rest of the world.

Richard Olson yesterday accompanied United States Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan (SRAP) Daniel Feldman in a meeting with Adviser to the Prime Minister on national security and foreign affairs, Sartaj Aziz.

The meeting, which was held following a series of US drone strikes in North Waziristan, was held to discuss Pakistan-US bilateral relations.

A lot of Pakistanis think of loans as investments. A lot think foreigners are putting money into Pakistan for the goodness of Pakistan, but some most foreigners are trying to make money and others are giving Pakistan bad deals. I guess the one good thing is that Pakistanis have positive view of the future, and think they can easily return the loans.

PIA needs money but money or no money the the people who make up the company is what's important. There's a lot of nepotism in PIA

Well, you know things are politically motivated when Ambassadors and other officials become party in any deal... What a darn entourage for a deal involving the refurbishment of engines...

who would invest anywhere for goodness, or think a loan is a investment by foreigner, yes a loan can be an investment by your govt or your organization and that investment could be in your country or outside. In this case US exim bank is investing in US, in US company called GE to modernize/improve/repair PIA's engines. this is just a business transaction between two business's one is PIA other is GE. In this case PIA is investing on herself by getting a loan just like i would get a loan to buy a house...that wouldnt make it a news "A Pakistani invested 800,000 Dollars in Canada".

We can play around with words all day. I'm just stating a trend I've noticed.
