This is a matter of serious concern. Indians keep saying there are millions of Bangladeshis living illegally in India but as patriotic as we are we keep saying no Bangladeshi resides in India. A huge number of them may be working as se.x workers in Mumbai and Kolkata. What our Govt. do? They keep denying it and do nothing to resolve the problem. Indians and Bangladeshis both are involved in sex trafficking to India.

Recently 9 Bangladeshis are rescued by BGB from trafficked to India.

Trafficked to India: Unspoken tales of Bangladeshi girls and women

Data from multiple studies suggest that a staggering number of Bangladeshi women and children are being trafficked to India every year. This picture was taken from Banglabandha border in Panchagarh earlier this year

Around 500,000 Bangladeshi women and children aged between 12-30 years have been illegally sent to India in the last decade

Around 50,000 Bangladeshi girls and women are trafficked to or through India every year, along the 4,156 km international border between the neighboring countries. Around 300,000 Bangladeshi children work in the brothels of India.

This was revealed in a study by the Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS).

Another study titled “Adolescence at the Border,” by anti-human trafficking NGO Justice and Care, in association with Border Security Force (BSF), showed that around 500,000 Bangladeshi women and children aged between 12-30 years have been illegally sent to India in the last decade.

Data from both studies suggest that a staggering number of Bangladeshi women and children are being trafficked every year.

But, according to the 2017 Trafficking in Persons Report published by the US Department of State, the government of Bangladesh identified 355 victims in 2016. Among them were 212 men, 138 women, and five children.

Key trafficking routes

Sanlaap, an Indian non-government organization (NGO), has identified areas where these trafficked girls are being used for sexual exploitation. The NGO has experience in rescuing trafficked girls, and is active in sites such as Matia Bazar, Canning, and Kultali of West Bengal, India.

Matia Bazar, a red light area with a population of over 400 women engaged in prostitution, is located between Barasat and Bashirhat.

Apart from being a source area for girls who are being trafficked to Mumbai, Delhi, and other parts of the country, this is also a transit route for girls trafficked from Bangladesh through the Bashirhat and Hasnabad border.

Canning is a small town in South 24 Paraganas, which is notorious for being the source, not just for trafficking, but also the busiest route for trafficked victims. Women and children are trafficked from Bangladesh through the waterways in the Sundarbans belt.

Every second to third household in Madhusudanpur of Kultali has a daughter or a daughter-in-law who was trafficked into prostitution in the red light areas of Kolkata or Mumbai.

Speaking to this correspondent, advocate and human rights activist Salma Ali said: “Victims of child marriage, abandoned single women, and garment workers, are vulnerable to trafficking. “Traffickers seek out vulnerable women. A victim of child marriage remains at high risk when her husband leaves her with a child. What will they do? They believe they have lost everything, and at that moment, traffickers lure these vulnerable girls and women.”

“Along the border we share with India, there are a limited number of check-posts on the land border, and on waterways. Traffickers also have their own houses in the border regions,” she added.

Fate of trafficked victims

According to a BSF study, a certain Indian syndicate buys young girls and women, mostly as prostitutes for brothels and hotels. They are also sold to dance bars, massage parlours, and hired as domestic workers.

Trafficked women are also forced into marriage, used as unskilled or semi-skilled labourers.

The study also reveals most victims are trafficked from Jashore and Satkhira to Gojadanga and Hakimpur in Bangladesh. The border here is completely unfenced and the population near the zero line is scarce, making it easier for traffickers to bring people into India.

Around 84% of these traffickers are male, while the other 16% are female.

The human trafficking from Bangladesh to India has reached a critical point, where the system works directly on the principle of supply and demand, through a well managed mechanism of traffickers working on both sides of the border, with the first link in the chain being Dhaka.

Untold tales

Many Bangladeshi victims of trafficking are waiting in India for their repatriation. The Dhaka Tribune visited one of the shelters in Kolkata, India, for an in depth understanding of life there.

The shelter home in Narendrapur is home to more than 150 girls who are minors rescued from prostitution, children of sex workers and vulnerable girls rescued from sexual abuse.

This correspondent visited the safe home on an afternoon, and found the girls were eagerly waiting for updates about their repatriation.

The untold stories of these girls unfolded one by one.

Betrayed by own family

Two sisters from Dhaka’s Jatrabari area revealed how they ended up in the safe home.

The older sister said: “We did not know we were being trafficked into India back in 2013. Our own aunt told us that we would be working at a jeans factory.”

The older sister is documented as 18 years old, and her sister is two years younger than her.

Dancing queen

Another girl shared her tale of being deceived.

“I am currently sixteen, but I was only 12 when I was trafficked to Mumbai, India, in 2014. One of my friends from my dance school introduced me to a man. He told me he would help me get work in the glamour industry,” said the dance loving girl.

She was rescued from Dongri, Mumbai’s underworld belly.

Leaving the room in a hurry, she told this correspondent she did not want to talk about it anymore.

Sold to the highest bidder

Rubina, a domestic worker from Chittagong, was sold at a red light district of West Bengal six years ago. Currently a mother of three, she was very young when she got married.

The woman, presently around 22 years old, had left her two young children with her relatives in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar, and moved to Jashore with her employer.

“I started working as a domestic worker after my husband married another woman. My employer took me to Jashore with her, and then sold me for Tk120,000 in the Haldia area of India, where I spent five years forced into prostitution,” she told this correspondent.

“My father is sick. I am not able to talk to my father. I want to go back to my family,” she added.

Rupali, a 17 year old from Postogola, Dhaka shared a similar tale of betrayal. She was sold by her boyfriend for Tk300,000 in 2014.

Explaining how she ended up in a safe home, Rupali said: “My boyfriend told me he is taking me to a nice place. One of his friends took me to India and sold me as a sex worker.

“I was too underage at that time, so my owners wanted to sell me in Mumbai. When I heard that, I ran away and surrendered to the police.”

The young girl has lived in two different shelters in India for the past four years, and she wants to go home.

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) rescued nine Bangladesh nationals who were being trafficked to India through Sadipur frontier in Benapole of Jahore on Friday, reports UNB.

Among them, five are women and two children. The rescued are from different parts of Faridpur, Narail and Bagerhat districts.

Tipped off, a team of BGB-49 battalion conducted a raid in the area and rescued the nine people in the morning, said Ariful Haque, commanding officer of BGB-49.

They were handed over to Benapole port police station.

However, none was arrested as the traffickers managed to flee the scene sensing the presence of the border guards.

Then blame it on BD males for not protecting their daughters. Don't become a father if you can't take care of your family.

.
I think its a matter of concern and shame... even if they aren't muslims, we should feel the pain and think that it will destroy society fabric... more homes will be shattered and their offspring mainly will be criminal... it is more due to poverty and over population than the 'need' and crime syndicate power/influence..

.
Isn't bangladesh a developed country, where women are treated equally and not traffiked into prostitution.

.
This is really Disgusting and inhuman to do this. Poor girls are being brutally exploited by these Bastards who should be hanged!

Its Bangladesh priority to honour all Indian martyrs in Liberation War: Mozammel(No time to address the above issue)

DHAKA, Jan 26, 2019 (BSS) -Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq today said Bangladesh will honour to all 1,661 martyred heroes of the Indian Armed Forces in 1971 Liberation War soon.

“Recognizing the supreme sacrifices made by the 1,661 Indian armed forces personnel in the great Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has decided to honour those martyrs posthumously” the minister said while addressing as the chief guest at a function, arranged by Indian High Commission in Dhaka for the celebration of 70th Republic Day of India at International Convention City in Bashundhara area here.

“During her (Sheikh Hasina) state visit to India in April, 2017, she personally conferred honour to the next of kin of 7 martyred Indian Armed Forces Personnel… On December 16 in 2018, at the Fort William of Kolkata, the minister himself handed over the honour to relatives of 12 personnel of the Indian Armed Forces,” he added.

He wished the members of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and to the government and the friendly people of India.

He said, on this day in 1950, the will of the people of India and their dream of ‘Freedom’ epitomized in the newly adopted constitution of India featuring Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity and thus the foundation of the world’s largest democracy was laid.

The minister said Bangladesh-India relationship is multifaceted in nature and is rooted in our shared history and geographical proximity.

“India’s critical role in support of Bangladesh’s war of independence under the leadership of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1971 was a watershed moment in our relations,” he said, adding that India was one of the first countries to recognize Bangladesh on December 06, 1971 as an independent country.

“With the wholehearted support of the people and under the able stewardship of our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we are confident that Bangladesh will become a developed country by 2041 – the 70th year our independence,” he continued.

The minister hoped that the friendship between the two countries will continue to grow from strength to strength in the days ahead.

Jatiya Sangsad speaker, ministers, deputy high commissioner of India in Dhaka, members of parliament and different distinguished guests, among others, were present at the function.

Before 1971 the social fabric and family network was so strong that people used to live in societies with a strong sense of belongingness and security. But after the independence of BD 1971 and become a Secular country, many things, many norms and customs have changed. With the passage of time, people saw a gradual decline in the role and efficacy of social institutions, its command and applicability. The hard realities of life, harsh economic conditions and access to information and education have shattered the myths in societies and bonds of families. In the threshold of a new century traditional, age-old values were swept away by the surge of modern individualistic values, that prefers individualism to collectivism, profit to charity and richness to egalitarian societies. Thus social values and family bonds that have for so long knotted BD society into a solid rock were now partially or fully discarded. Consequently, women and children who were protected by the social safety net of our family and society are now no more treated so. They are left to the mercy of the open market, which is usually throat cut and ruthless. Profit is the only driving force here and it determined the price of women and child, which appeared to be very lucrative. This is you called prosperity and forward thinking of BD , where factory worker can make Nike shoes but he/she doesn't have values of life, can't afford it or maybe die in the ill structure of factory and no one will come to save them. This is great wrath of Allah upon BD peoples, who deny Allah in state business and become a secular country. Women are the building block of family and give too much respect in the Quran and Hadith. and if you want to destroy the civilization, start from women. So sad to see Mulsim Bangladeshi girls who are trafficked to India by organized networks usually end up in brothels in Kolkata or Mumbai. Many victims are raped by their traffickers or by Bangladeshi and Indian border patrol guards. I have no power or strength to stop these but I hate this type of practice from the bottom of the heart.

@UKBengali

Why is this still happening ?

For money!! There is a gang who pretend to be well established and say they will marry the girl to her family or lure the girl to marry them without any money, gifts or any kind of demand from girls family. Many poor family give their daughter’s marriage to those guys. After that they smuggle them to India.

Second way is they tell girl that they will arrange good job for her. While thinking they are going to get the good job in Dhaka or any other place ended up in India where they are forced into prostitution.
