482 women, 132 Non-Muslims to contest on NA, PAs reserved seats
ISLAMABAD, Dec 18 (APP): In all, 482 female and 132 Non-Muslim candidates would be contesting the 2008 polls for National and Provincial Assemblies, against the seats reserved for women and Non-Muslims.
According to details, for election on seats reserved for women in National Assembly, total 150 candidates would be contesting on 60 NA seats out of 300 candidates who had filed their nomination papers.
Almost half of the women candidates vying for election against reserved seats, were rejected on basis of non-acceptance of the nomination papers or they withdrew their candidature.
Among those contesting the elections, 81 are from Punjab, 36 from Sindh, 23 from NWFP and 10 are from Balochistan. In all, nomination papers of 69 candidates from Punjab, 36 from Sindh, 20 from NWFP and 17 from Balochistan were rejected. In all, 20 candidates withdrew their candidature.
For all the four provincial assemblies, 332 women candidates would be in the run out of total 700 as nomination papers of 342 candidates were rejected and 26 withdrew their candidature.
From Punjab, there are 159 women contestants, from Sindh 83, from NWFP 50 and from Balochistan, there are 31 contestants for the provincial assembly seats for women.
Among 132 contesting candidates against the seats reserved for Non-Muslims all over Pakistan, 36 would be contesting for the National Assembly seats and 96 for the provincial assemblies reserved seats.
For National Assembly, 89 candidates had filed their nomination papers against 10 seats reserved for Non-Muslims of which 50 nomination papers were rejected and three withdrew the contest.
For provincial assemblies, in Punjab 117 candidates had filed nomination papers of which 89 were rejected and none among remaining withdrew their candidature.
In Sindh, 31 candidates would contest against seats reserved for Non-Muslims out of 72, as remaining candidates either were rejected or withdrew their candidature.
In NWFP and Balochistan, 21 and 16 candidates are in the run respectively out of 37 and 36 who had filed nomination papers as nomination papers of remaining either were rejected or they withdrew their candidature.
