Tibetan youth sets himself ablaze in China - Asia-Pacific - Al Jazeera English

A Tibetan youth has burned himself to death in southwestern China, the third self-immolation in three days, in what overseas Tibetan rights groups said reflects growing resentment against China's policies in the Tibetan areas.

Dorjee, 18, died after he set himself ablaze in Aba county in Sichuan province on Monday in protest at China's policy on Tibet, human rights organisations Free Tibet and International Campaign for Tibet said .

A local official and police told Reuters by telephone that they had no knowledge of the incident.

Dorjee was the 25th self-immolation in the past year, with at least 18 believed to have died from their injuries, according to rights groups.

The latest deaths were all ordinary people and not, as is often the case, Buddhist monks or former clergy.

Isabel Hilton, editor of the London-based China Dialogue, said the string of self immolations was a measure of despair in response to an intensification of Chinese policies.

“This is certainly the most widespread and consistent protest since 2008. And the interesting thing about it is that although it began with religious community, monks and nuns, it has spread way beyond that," she said.

"And it has spread into places that was not traditionally close to the Dalai Lama."

Free Tibet, based in Britain, cited an eyewitness saying Dorjee set himself on fire near a bridge and then walked in flames to a government office building where he collapsed.

Tibetan monks at the Kirti monastery in India's Dharamsala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile, said Dorjee shouted slogans against the Chinese government's policies on Tibet as he set himself ablaze, according to the US-based International Campaign for Tibet.

Dorjee's death came two days after two Tibetans killed themselves by setting themselves on fire in Sichuan and neighbouring Gansu province.

"This third self-immolation in as many days underlines that Tibetans will not stop protesting until their calls for freedom are heeded," Stephanie Brigden, the director of Free Tibet, said in an emailed statement.

"The international community must take immediate action."

Activists say China violently stamps out religious freedom and culture in Tibet, the mountainous region of western China which has been under Chinese control since 1950.

Ugh, waste of life. Can we start calling self-immolation "failed suicide-bombing" from now on?

Anyway, this is obviously a trend that's hard to ignore. My guess is that they're angry about:

1. Economic gap between Hans and Tibetans.
2. Anti-religion policies from the cultural revolution that never got lifted.

Hopefully something productive can be done about this.

wtf is this? are you suggesting that this is our fault?

Woah, don't freak out. If we're stopping them from practicing their backwards religion, they're not going to like it. Simple, no?

If so called Anti-religion policies from Culture Revolution still remain then there is no oppertunity for these monks to burn themselves.
I prefer the great Cutural Revolution for something with healthy looking.

That's inevitable and will help China and Asia in long term.
Just pray that this time it happens without any bloodshed.

Loss of innocent civilian life is sad and it must be prevented. I'm sure China is capable to deal with it and will stop this trend by addressing their problems. :agree:

These self immolation is getting very serious. With knowing much about the situations there I'm not going say who is right and who is wrong. Nevertheless China must take this as her first priority and take steps to solve the problem before it gets out of control.

There has to be some kind of gives and takes and, perhaps, initiate a dialogue with the Dalai Lama will only shows China's maturity as a great nation who care genuinely about her people.

Hey great mighty superpower China, please do something to stop immolation of tibetans, they are your citizens after all till now.

We have already had talks with the Lama and it broke down.

Yes China need not do anything, these monks will finish themselves by immolation. Its good for China.

We can't stop every random burning now ,a women just burned herself and left her children without a mother. If the Lama is any kind of Leader he will tell them to stop, we all know suicides won't change anything.

This "problem" will solve itself.

I am not trying to be insensitive to my Chinese members.
But why are they self immolating themselves it is quite disturbing the manner in which they protest, isn't CPC giving them religious freedom.

Dalai Lama can stop these monks from self burning in a heart beat. Presumably he just encourages such actions.
