30 Years Ago, ISRO Launched The First Experimental Flight Of SLV-3

In the early 1970s, the Indian Space Research Organisation started a project named Satellite Vehicle Launch. The purpose was to develop the technological capabilities required to launch satellites into space. The first launch of SLV-3 took place on August 10, 1979, which even though was a failure, set the tone for future successes.

The project was spearheaded by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. SLV-3 was India's first experimental flight that took place on August 10, 1979.

SLV-3 was all solid, 4-stage vehicle that weighed 17 tonnes. It had a height of 22 metres and was capable of placing 40 kg class payloads in Low Earth Orbit or LEO.

SLV-3 was launched with Rohini Technology payload on board, however, the satellite could not be placed in orbit.

A faulty valve had caused the vehicle to crash into the Bay of Bengal, 317 seconds after its launch.

But soon thereafter, on July 18, 1980, SLV-3 was successfully launched from Sriharikota Range and the Rohini Satellite was placed in orbit.

The 1980 launch made Indian the sixth member of an exclusive club of nations who had begun conquering the space.

Post the 1980 launch, there were two more launches held in May 1981 and April 1983, where Rohini satellites carrying remote sensing sensors were placed in orbit.

The overall success of the SLV project paved the way for more advanced launch vehicle projects such as the ASLV, PSLV, and GSLV.

ISRO achieved many milestones this year including the launch of 104 satellites in one attempt to the launch of heaviest rocket GSLV Mark III. Going forward, the organisation is now readying to launch two moon missions - Chandrayaan-2 and Team Indus Lander - early next year.

The math on years don't add up. Is India using common core math?

You are also proving that this math issue is affecting more than one Indian.
I don't know what you are talking about, I was talking about this sentence in the article, assuming the typo (40 years in place of 30)--->
The first launch of SLV-3 took place on August 10, 1979
