RAB claims to have killed three robbers in a gunbattle in Sundarbans in southern Bangladesh.
It says the encounter was reported from Mrigmari Canal of East Sundarbans Chandpai Range around 7am on Tuesday. The RAB says those killed belonged to the notorious Mortuza gang.
One of those killed was identified as Selim, 37, who hails from Mongla Upazilas Sundarbans Union.
RAB claims to have recovered seven weapons and some ammunition from the spot.
RAB-8 chief Lt Col Faridul Alam told bdnews24.com two RAB teams raided the area on Tuesday morning following a tip off.
The robbers opened fire provoking retaliation from RAB teams which surrounded one of their hideouts three kilometres inside the Mrigmari Canal around 7:30am. The encounter lasted for nearly 30 minutes, he said.
Alam claimed the robbers retreated after a while, leaving behind three bodies and weapons.
He said Selim was identified by local fishermen.
Bagerhat police SP Khandkar Rafiqul Islam said a Mongla police team, led by Sub Inspector Monjur-e-Elahi, is also reaching for Sundarbans Joymoni.
RAB is expected to hand over the weapons and bodies to the police.
