Its official now. Indias swanky airports have joined the league of top airports in the world.
Three of themHyderabads Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Mumbais Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and Delhis Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA)have figured in the latest Airport Service Quality (ASQ) rankings of the Airports Council International (ACI) at first, second and fourth position respectively in different categories.
In the 2010 survey of the global airport rating agency, Indian airports have outshined yesteryears leading airports like Heathrow, JFK and others in different airport categories.
Hyderabads RGIA, which was ranked in the top five airports worldwide in 2009, retained its number one position for the second year in the 5-15 million passenger category. It beat competition from Japans Nagoya airport, Cancun, Indianapolis and Austin airports to secure the top spot.
Delhis IGIA was ranked fourth by ACI in the 25-40 million passengers category. It joined the elite league of Incheon-Seoul, Changi-Singapore and Shanghai Pudong-China. Last year, IGIA was also awarded the most improved airport in the Asia-Pacific region. Mumbais CSIA airport took the second position in the 15-25 million passengers bracket, ahead of Vancouver and Taipei airports.
Both RGIA and IGIA airports are operated by the GMR group. Speaking on the occasion, GM Rao, group chairman, said; Its a moment of immense pride for the entire country. These awards are a testimony to the diligent approach of not just the GMR staff but all the stakeholders including the entire airport community.
It is a big feat for the Indian airports to be featured in the ASQ rankings as it follows a rigorous method to assign its ratings. The ASQ passenger survey measures customer feedback on a range of service delivery parameters that track the customer experience at an airport from the moment of arrival to the departure gate.
To be eligible for the annual ASQ awards, an airport has to participate in the ASQ survey during all four quarters of the year. In 2010 the survey was conducted at 153 airports worldwide.
Asia Pacific airports made a clean sweep of this worldwide category, as they did last year. We applaud the consistent success story of the Asia Pacific airports, which set the bar in service excellence said Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI.
