Rohtak, April 16

An ISI “informer” has been nabbed in a joint operation carried out by the Central and state intelligence agencies and the district police.

The accused has been identified as Gaurav Kumar, a resident of Gannaur town in Sonepat district. Superintendent of Police (SP) Pankaj Nain told mediapersons here on Monday that Gaurav, who studies at a local academy, was arrested from Model Town area on Sunday.

They had information that Gaurav used to share information related to the Army with Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI, he said, adding that he had been arrested and a case was registered against him at the Civil Lines police station.

Gaurav was produced before a local court, which remanded him in four-day police custody.

Nain said investigation had revealed Gaurav was preparing to join the Army. “Nearly one-and-a-half-years ago, he came in contact with two girls, Amita, alias Sonu Kaur, and Amita Ahluwalia, on Facebook. The girls are ISI agents. Gaurav told them he worked for the Army,” he stated.

The SP said that the girls then asked Gaurav to share photographs and videos of the Army areas. Whenever Gaurav used to visit Army camps for recruitment, he used to share photographs or videos through video calls or social media.

Gradually, the girls advised Gaurav to work for the ISI and assured him that he could get an attractive amount for his services. Gaurav sent his bank account details to the girls through Facebook. During questioning, the accused revealed that he had appeared in 18 recruitment drives of the Army.

“Yes, it is a kind of honey-trap. The ISI has been using girls or women for its undercover or intelligence activities. These girls or women assume fictitious names and contact youths through Facebook or other social networking websites. They lure the youths to share secret information of the country in return for handsome amounts,” the SP said.

The bag was found by a Pathankot resident near his house in Prem Nagar locality.

A bag containing three live .22 bore cartridges and a political map of Pakistan found from a locality near the Air Force station on Monday sent the Pathankot police in an overdrive.

The bag was found by Capt Sat Pal Saroch (retd) from near his residence in Prem Nagar locality. He then informed the area’s councillor and the police.

The cantonment is barely 500 m away from Prem Nagar. Vivek Sheel Soni, SSP, and a team of senior officers took the bag in their possession.

Initially, it was said that the bag also had an Army uniform, but the SSP denied it.

Earlier in 2009, an ISI agent was held from the Prem Nagar locality. A few days ago, two locals had reported saw three men, one with a backpack, roaming under suspicious circumstances near the airbase.

On April 17, a carjacking incident took place in Bamial near the international border. The police had suspected that it was possible that the carjackers might have been fidayeens.

The police have put the city on alert. “We are not ruling out anything. A search operation is on in Prem Nagar and its adjoining localities. A dog squad has been pressed into service.

Forensic experts have also been requisitioned. The Air Force and the Army authorities have been alerted too,” said SSP Soni. “The terror angle is definitely ruled out going by the investigations so far,” he added.

She passed on information to ISI officials in Pakistan.

A Delhi court on Saturday sentenced former diplomat Madhuri Gupta to three years’ imprisonment in a case of passing on sensitive official information to Pakistani intelligence officials.

However, additional sessions judge Sidharth Sharma granted her bail to challenge her conviction in the Delhi High Court.

The court had on Friday convicted her in the case. She was posted at the Indian High Commission in Pakistan as Second Secretary (Press and Information).

No leniency
The court also rejected her plea for a lenient punishment. “Undoubtedly, from a person of her stature, it was expected that she would act in a more responsible manner than an ordinary citizen as she was at a high position of trust but her actions tarnished the image of the country and has caused severe threat to the security of the country. Therefore, she does not deserve any leniency in punishment,” Mr. Sharma said.

The charge sheet filed by the special cell of the Delhi police said that the accused had admitted to passing on information to Pakistani intelligence agencies. She had come in contact with intelligence officials Mubshar Raza Rana and Jamshed through journalist Javed Rashid.

Holding her guilty, Special Judge Sidharth Sharma said: “The conduct of the accused in passing on sensitive/secret information in light of evidence by the prosecution categorically proves the charge under the second part of Section 3(1)(c) [obtaining, publishing or communicating to any person any secret official information which is useful to an enemy] of the Official Secrets Act, punishable by up to a period of three years in jail, as well as under Section 5 of the Act read with Section 120-B [criminal conspiracy] of the IPC.”

The judge, however, acquitted her of the charge under the first part of Section 3(1)(c), for which the maximum sentence is 14 years.

Apart from conversing on Facebook, the Constable chatted with the woman on WhatsApp where he saved her Pakistan coded number under the name “Pakistani dost,” said the ATS, adding that he was being influenced towards conversion and anti-India ideas on Kashmir.

The Constable faces charges under Sections 3,4,5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act, 121A of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to waging war against the government and Section 66D of the IT Act.

His bank accounts would be checked to ascertain if he received any money for sharing information. The ATS will also question him on the information he allegedly leaked to the ISI.
