The Election Commission of Pakistan released annual declaration of assets and liabilities of parliamentarians, declaring that the richest and poorest lawmakers belonged to ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
Noor Alam Khan is the richest Member of Parliament, owning assets worth Rs 32 billion, while Jamshed Dasti, who also belongs to the PPP, is the poorest parliamentarian with an empty bank account.
According to the data, the net worth of assets belonging to both Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif have increased. The latters assets observed a tremendous boost of over 100% during the financial year 2011-12, report said.
For the first time, the premiers own assets exceeded the Rs20 million marks. He is among those legislators of the country who do not possess a vehicle of their own despite having a fleet of official vehicles used for his protocol.
However, the assets declared by one of his sons, Abdul Qadir Gilani, a member of the Punjab Assembly, are much more than the prime minister himself. He owns assets worth Rs 56.3 million including a bullet-proof vehicle.
Ali Musa Gilani, the prime ministers younger son who is currently facing corruption charges, did not have to declare his assets as he has been in office as an MNA for less than a year.
Gilani did not reveal the assets of his spouse for the first time since he took up his office. The parliamentarians are required to submit the declaration of assets of their spouses and dependent members of the family.
Shahbaz Sharif in his annual declaration informed that the total worth of his assets now stands at Rs210.4 million while he had declared assets and liabilities worth Rs94.3 million in the fiscal 2010-11.
It is vital to highlight here the CMs declared assets are less than the values of assets he declared for one of his wives, Nusrat Shahbaz. According to the data, he only owns a vehicle and this too was a gift.
Hamza Shahbaz, the son of Shahbaz Sharif, owned assets worth Rs213.7 million while he declared his wife Mehrunissahs assets worth only Rs2.5 million. Hamza, however, left the column pertaining to vehicle ownership vacant.
Other billionaires in the National Assembly include Mehboobullah Jan (PPP), Shahid Khaqan Abbasi (PML-N) and Jehangir Khan Tareen (PTI).
JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman owned worth of Rs 5 million, Pervaiz Elahi of Rs 127 million, Arbab Alamgir of Rs 1.68 billion, while Faryal Talpur is the owner of assets of Rs 115.30 million.
Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has Rs 16.60 million in cash along with property comprising of 904 kanals of land, six plots and a farmhouse.
The net worth of assets of ANP chief Asfandyar Wali Khan is a little over Rs 30 million. The value of assets owned by Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao the chief of his own faction of PPP is Rs 218 million.
