On 31st December 1944, the Germans launched operation Nordwind. This attack, occurring while the Allies were still struggling to repulse the famous Ardennes offensive, threatened to capture Strasbourg once again, after its liberation by the French 2e DB (2nd Armoured Division) of General Leclerc in November 1944. As the US forces had to move out to the Ardennes front, the French who were already fighting in the Colmar Pocket decided to hold on Strasbourg at whatever cost
