We have learned about the Great Emu War, the Pig War, the Anglo-Zanzibar War and even the 335-Year War. All of them were somewhat funny and weird. Today we are going to add up another one to the list. It is the Lijar-France War or the 98-Year War. You must be thinking why it was funny or what really happened at the war? Let us find out through this list of 15 interesting Lijar-France War.
Interesting Lijar-France War Facts: 1-15
1. Let us start by telling a bit of Lijar. It is actually a small village located in Southern Spain and the head of the village is its mayor.
2. In 1883, Spain’s the then King, Alfonso XII was travelling to France. The monarch was insulted at Paris by a rowdy Parisian mob.
3. This incident really did not affect the relations between French government and Madrid but the mayor of the small village Lijar found the incident to insult on Spain’s honor.
4. The mayor wasn’t at all happy about the Spanish government demanding justice and was hell bent on getting the honor back.
5. His love for his nation provoked him to call upon his fellow villagers and declare a war on France.
6. The entire village stood up but unfortunately, the total might of the Lijar village taking account of all its residents was only 300.
7. The mayor named Miguel Garcia Saez declared war on October 14. He actually went on to pen down a proper document or declaration of war. The document is today put on display in town hall of Lijar.
8. Going back to history, France was either not even aware that she was in war with Lijar or probably didn’t even care about it even if she was aware of the incident.
9. France had every reason of either not caring about it or perhaps not being aware of the look threat of Lijar. Why would she be? Lijar was located at a distance of 800 kilometers from the border of France and was way too small to even bother about. Even with today’s high-tech Google Earth technology, Lijar barely shows up.
10. As far as the military might and fire power of Lijar was concerned, there was no standing army at all and only a few weapons were at disposal.
11. The 300 villagers – well yes, villager – were nothing but farmers and because Lijar had absolutely no means of getting into French territory (because they were 800 kilometers away and transportation was a major problem), the farmers lost interest in war and soon they slipped back into their usual chores of farming and daily life.
12. Guess what? No shot was fired! There were no casualties and no bloodshed at all. Lijar probably didn’t even see the face of a single enemy.
13. There was absolutely no outcome of the war in its truest sense but something happened, something really interesting. Mayor Saez receive a nick, an elevated status in fact and was named as ‘Terror of the Sierras’.
14. Yet another outcome was that the state of war continued for 98 years and eventually in 1970 when the then Spanish King, Juan Carlos received a warm welcome in Paris, the then mayor of Lijar, Diego Sanchez Cortes tried to settle things down with France. As expected, the French government did not pay heed to Cortes’ overtures.
15. In early 1980s however, a French diplomat from Madrid visited Lijar and signed a peace treaty, thereby ending the Lijar-French war!
