123 KP cops sacked, compulsorily retired in 5 months

Out of the 245 officials of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police suspended over the charges of corruption, misuse of power and criminal acts during the last five months, 123 have been dismissed or compulsorily retired while 46 were awarded other punishment.

The statistics compiled by the Central Police Office in Peshawar showed that 32 police officials charged under various allegations were exonerated while 43 cases are pending. The 245 suspended cops included those from the ranks of deputy superintendents of police to constables. Three district police officers (DPOs) were also removed during the period over various charges and have yet to be given significant postings.

The Bannu Range remained on top in the action against the corrupt cops. Two policemen there were nominated by the deputy inspector general (DIG) himself while 39 cases were sent by the DPO Bannu. Up to 28 alleged corrupt cops were named by the DPO Lakki Marwat for further inquiry by the Accountability Commission.

The police authorities have constituted high-level commissions at the regional and provincial level to probe into complaints received against the corrupt policemen and recommend punishments or otherwise. Immediately after the drive was launched against the corrupt policemen, 16 cops were suspended in the Peshawar Capital City Police and inquiry was ordered against them.

At least 23 policemen were nominated by the Mardan Range, 36 by Dera Ismail Khan, 62 by Malakand, 22 by Kohat, 17 by Hazara and 69 by Bannu Range in the drive against the corrupt cops.

However, there was a feeling among the public that a large number of the known corrupt cops weren’t included in these lists for various reasons. Most of the highly corrupt policemen in the force reportedly enjoy the backing of the senior police officers as well as political figures.

Both the cases forwarded by the DIG Bannu are under process. Out of the 39 cases sent by the DPO Bannu, 24 policemen were dismissed, two were awarded other punishments, five cases were under process and policemen in eight cases were exonerated. In Lakki Marwat, six cops were dismissed, 10 were awarded major punishment, and six inquiries were still going on while six other cops were exonerated.

Ten cops were dismissed or compulsorily retired in Dera Ismail Khan district while 11 others met the same fate in Tank. Nine policemen lost their jobs in Karak, four in Hangu and three in Kohat district.

According to the statistics put together by the CPO, 16 cases of corruption filed by the Peshawar Police are still in the process. Twenty policemen, including two station house officers, have already been dismissed from service by the Capital City Police Officer during the last couple of months over charges of corruption, absence from duty and other allegations.

In Mardan Range, two cops were forcibly retired and two others were dismissed in Mardan district, one was dismissed and one case is pending in Swabi. Five policemen were dismissed in Charsadda while six were sacked in Nowshera district.

One cop each lost job in Abbotabad, Mansehra and Battagram districts of the Hazara Range where four cases were filed by the officers concerned in Abbotabad, three in Haripur, five in Mansehra, two each in Battagram and Kohistan and one in Torghar.

In Swat, all the 12 cops suspended over charges of corruption were compulsorily retired. The same was the case in Buner where 11 such cases were reported. Besides, two policemen lost their jobs in Chitral, three in Dir Lower, five in Dir Upper, and one in Shangla.
