PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS 12) — Eleven Chinese nationals are being held by ICE after their boat washed up on Palm Beach Saturday morning.
CBS 12 got an exclusive look inside the boat and was the only one to speak to the man who tipped off investigators.
“Around 6:45 am we noticed that there was a shadow on the beach. I ran and said oh my god it’s a boat!” says Guy Clark, the man who spotted the boat.
Clark says he ran to the shore quickly because he thought someone was hurt.
“The first thing I thought was people were in trouble. that’s why I went down there,” says Clark.
Clark says there was a heavy gas smell because their gas reserves had spilled onto the ocean floor.
When he got there he became even more concerned when he saw signs of life.
He found many life vests spread across the beach.
“ I realized that it had to have been a lot of people on the boat because the way the life preservers were scattered along the beach,” says Clark.
When law enforcement arrived they found these packed duffle bags inside along with an extra engine.
“That’s pretty strange you don’t normally have another extra engine in your boat. so these people were prepared to go a long distance,” says Clark
Border patrol says they found 11 Chinese nationals hiding in nearby bushes after searching for hours. They say the boat washed up because of engine trouble.
“ They were obviously trying to get away from a bad life,” says Clark.
Border patrol says the boat came from the Bahamas.
They say the people who were inside won’t be facing any criminal charges, but they will be sent back to China.
