100-day left for Military World Games
Hyderabad, July 8: With 100 days left for the fourth Military World Games to take off, as many as 78 countries, including China and United States, have so far confirmed their participation in the second biggest sporting event in the world after Olympics.
Pakistan has not yet confirmed its participation. "We sincerely hope they will take part," the Minister of State for Defence Palam Raju told reporters as hectic preparations were underway in Hyderabad which is hosting the event.
The Minister, along with Chief of Army Staff, J J Singh, and Naval Chief Admiral, Suresh Mehta, unveiled the Military Games medals at a glittering ceremony held at Gachibowli sports complex here.
To mark the commencement of 100-day countdown, the Minister flagged off a cycle rally which will pass through 21 districts in Andhra Pradesh to promote public awareness about the Games.
As many as 4,500 contestants from 78 countries have confirmed their participation and more are expected to join as the event, scheduled to be held from October 14 to 21, draws closer.
This is the first time that India is hosting the Military Games, considered the second biggest sporting event in the world after Olympics.
"The choice of India as destination for hosting such a prestigious event shows the respect that our armed forces command worldwide. It is a moment of pride and honour for all of us," Palam Raju said adding that a budgetary allocation of Rs 127.69 crores had been made to conduct the games.
The Military World Games are held once in four years under the aegis of International Military Sports Council or Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) in French, the second largest sporting body after International Olympic Association.
The armed forces of 128 countries are members of CISM, based in the Belgian capital of Brussels. The games were first held in Rome in 1995, marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II and the ratification of the UN Charter.
The second Military World Games were held in Zagreb, Croatia (August 1999) and the third again in Italy (December 2003).
The games, which are being held for the first time outside Europe, will showcase the sporting talents of military personnel across the globe. The motto of the sporting event is 'friendship through sport'.
