FOR some, work is a job to pay the bills and fund a lifestyle. But for a select few, work is life. It is passion, motivation and their way of leaving a well-earned mark on the world. But how do you turn a hunger for success into the real deal? Here are some top tips from the best in the biz.
Managing director of Microsoft Australia, Pip Marlow, has achieved dizzy heights of success over her career in IT. The passionate mother-of-two says success means lifelong learning and the ability to change with the times.
She says:
1. Be the real you
“Think of the leaders you respect and understand why they evoke that response. For me, it’s about authenticity, but you can’t try to be authentic – you either are, or you’re not. What you can do is stay focused on your true north. Know who you are and what you believe in. Leaders who do this lead and speak from the heart. That is what I aspire to do every day.”
2. Learn from the best
“Build your network inside and outside your organisation. Be visible and accessible; and be known for the things you believe in. Be a mentor, have a mentor; and ask a few key people to be your sponsor. They don’t just listen and coach, they will actively help to progress your career.”
3. Be open to being better
“It’s about having a mindset of curiosity and lifelong learning. Sometimes we need to unlearn what we have learnt to see the opportunities. We no longer live in a world where information is corralled and caged, so don’t do it in your business. Look around every corner for wisdom and enable your team to engage in active, robust discussion without the faux borders of job title, business group, age or experience.”
4. Don’t be afraid of failure
“Take risks. Be disruptive. The world is changing and you need to move fast and ‘fail fast’ to keep pace with innovation and change. It is inevitable you will make mistakes. Learn quickly, adjust course and move forward. Your courage and agility as a leader sets the tone for the rest of your business.”
5. There’s no ‘I’ in team
“Have a relentless focus and belief on the people around you. Always put them first and actively include them every step of the way. If you let them, they will shape your career and make it greater than you could ever imagine on your own.”
