Solomon2, you are clearly an expert on Pakistan.
Please tell me, how much time have you spent in Pakistan?
No more stories about the Bengali neighbours, please. If you pretend to understand Pakistan and contemporary Pakistani thinking, you surely have more to go on than a forum and the...
I'll go further. The ghairat brigade has been harping on issues which they either know nothing about, or pursue solely in their self interest and short term political popularity. The ghairat brigade includes not just Imran Khan etc. but also Nawaz Sharif and company, JI and many more. Have we...
No. There was a tremendous sense of enthusiasm, from what I witnessed myself, when Gen. Musharraf took over. The referendum he conducted - which by most accounts is not seen as unfair - also demonstrated that he had the majority firmly behind him.
Search the web, you'll find tons of images of...
Most people I know and talk to don't think of military governments in Pakistan as "dictatorships". Most of them have been more reflective of the will of the people - hence more democratic in my book - as compared to many elected governments.
As for Zia, off the cuff I would say maybe 1 in 10...
Kutt@_Bimar, actually GDP or per-capita, it doesn't matter in the case of India and Pakistan. In both cases you see Pakistan roughly 20-25% ahead. And the reason is that per capita income for both countries is roughly the same, or in other words, the ratio of GDP to population is basically...
Once again. This cable is *one* input given to the US. After considering *ALL* inputs, the USG is pursuing a policy of partnership with Pakistan. So rather than act foolish and make a big deal out of this *SINGLE* perspective and *SOLE* input, how about we watch the actions of the USG in...
Actually I completely disagree. A useful measure is how significantly the incoming funds affect your country. It doesn't affect your country at all if you have 1 guy sending in $10,000 per year even though that would yield ($10K remittance/1 size of diaspora =) $10K. This would be many times...
Very interesting. I was trying to figure out how Pakistan is doing on this front. I think our numbers were $8.91B in FY09-10
Daily Times - Leading News Resource of Pakistan
On a per capita basis, one could project the following:
Pakistan ($8.9B/170M population) = $52.35 per person
India...
POTUS blindly supported India's bid? Ok then. Yes, Karthic, the President of the United States was so smitten by his love of India that he wore a pair of blinders, disregarded all else and just made the statement "blindly".
There is still no framework, no agreement on which countries will be...
Wonderful performance of one of my all time favourites, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" by Bruce Springsteen and U2. Was a very refreshing break in my morning routine both from work and the perpetual negativity in the press.
Please listen and send blessings and salaam to the...
Actually, expatriate populations that have been living abroad for extended periods of time don't reflect domestic sentiment. Take the case of Pakistan's expatriates. On most issues, their opinions would not be reflective of the ordinary man in the street in Pakistan.
Does the President need to authorize the state dept to go after someone who has stolen their data? This sounds really strange. The Dept. should be empowered under US law to take measures.
It's not just the US being affected, but it is primarily all US allies that are being affected.
Also, I...
Good point. The same way Pakistanis are sickened by the excesses of these Arab dictators and their continuing servitude to their real masters, but not for a second do we confuse our views concerning these 20,000 member "royal families" with our affection for the arab countries and people.
Don't go down this road. I don't want this to degenerate into another one of those salafi/wahabist funded terror vs. iranian supported Sipahe Mohammad type discussions. Your views and bias are quite clear. Now back to the topic.
