ISIS spread like wildfire on the internet and on social media. That's why they got way more exposure in "well connected" and smart countries, rather than poor, third world countries, where the average person is struggling to make ends meet.
They're joining up because:
1)They are bumped full of emotions from seeing civilians in Syria getting massacred and wanted to vent their anger in any way possible.
2) they are not fully aware of the full picture and reality of ISIS and its agenda due to lack of research or language barrier...

Yeah, dying on the journey is a common place. If you took a trip on the old Hajj routes you'll see many gravestones for Pilgrims laying on both sides of the ancient roads, some of them go back to the time of the prophet.
