Afghans (and I guess Pakistanis to a lesser extent) have mistaken style for substance. Dressing in fine European tuxedos does not usher in modernity.

Islam is the most modern religion if we understand and practice it in its essence, instead of just rituals, we should grasp its main themes and understand what it wants.. You will be the most modern person in your outlook regardless of what you wear or how you appear.

I think you choose to emphasis how something can be -- while I choose to emphasis how the world is. From a population of over a billion human beings: how many space faring, cancer cure finding, Nobel prize winning individuals has the Muslim world produced in the last fifty years. And, yes we must talk of the state of affairs as they are today -- not as they were seven hundred years ago or can be two hundred years in the future.

Also note how other civilizations have transformed themselves in the past fifty years, namely: the Chinese and the Dharmic civilizations. I would argue, that part of their flowering is that they have kept religion boxed in the temple and let science flourish in the mind.
