DRDO hands over Weapons Locating Radar to Army; to detect and destroy Artillery Fire from Pakistan


DRDO's weapon-locating radar Swati was formally handed over to the Indian Army on Thursday, with Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar saying its deployment will reduce artillery fire from across the border.

Sources said four radars deployed along the Line of Control for trial have already proved their efficacy since artillery fire from Pakistan's side had reduced after their deployment.

The Indian Army has at present ordered 30 such radars. "The radars have been on the LoC for two months now for trials. Artillery fire has gone down," a defence source said.

The weapon-locating radar developed by the DRDO's Electronic and Radar Development Establishment provides fast and accurate location of enemy artillery including shells, mortars and rockets.

The radar is also capable of guiding fire from an artillery gun attached to it, meaning thereby that the radar can not only locate artillery guns on the enemy side but also ensure their destruction.

Speaking at the event organised to hand over the radar and other equipment to the Army by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Parrikar lauded the scientists.

"Swati could be a great equipment to ensure adversaries do not use artillery fire. If the LoC is devoid of any artillery fire in the near future, you can be sure Swati radar has gone there," the minister said.

He said the radar, however, used a "passive array", and suggested the DRDO develop a radar using "active array" in a couple of years. "The passive array radar can then be exported, after the Army gets enough numbers," the minister said.

Parrikar also congratulated the DRDO for successful trial of exo-atmospheric Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV) interceptor missile and endo-atmospheric Advanced Air Defence missile, both part of a two-tier anti-ballistic missile system. "Last year has been very fruitful for the DRDO. There were around 25 missile tests... usually they get criticism," Parrikar said.

Does Pakistan have the same type of radar, or a radar to detect these new threats? The solution seems in recon drones.. but what else?

sorry counter battery radars which do exactly what this does so no advantage lost, secondly shoot and scoot howitzer on truck chassis are being sought for a reason!

May be ECM development ... (necessity is the mother of invention).
 
why do u think Pakistan is looking for new wheeled mobile artillery platforms which are used in shoot and scoot tactics.

M-109 and M-110 are a nightmare for Indian Artillery already. M-110 with 203mm gun and 30km is a good counter batter platform. To add to this, if wheeled MLRS were not enough along with HATF 1 an/2, another problem has risen for India, NASR.

There are still many ways to confuse enemy artillery locating radars by, use ELINT/ECM/ESM techniques:
1. Use jamming techniques. Sending back confusing signals of same frequency (usually microwave).
2. Use deception. Generate false artillery firing signals from many different locations which can be caught up by enemy radar, where artillery may not even be present. Even show false "flashes" from such locations. Make the enemy think an entire artillery brigade has been deployed in the area.
3. Detect enemy radar transmissions and guide artillery fire/air attack to destroy it as priority.

In mountain warfare, towed artillery has limitations, so positioning them properly from counter battery fire is important especially using natural cover, though this wont save them from detection, counter artillery fire , probably. They can be spread out. Also can be placed under armoured bunkers.
 
Pakistan also has base bleed shells which follow non projectile trajectory, throwing enemy detection radars off the scent.

Bharti jabroni media always creates a perception of as if Pakistan is nothing in front of bharti jabronis, but when Pakistan tests one missile or new military hardware the whole of bharti jabronis explodes and starts crying & shit out their dippers.

M-109 is not that mobile which can lift and put on the top of the hills. To Hill

I don't know If I should laugh or I should Cry on my enemy.
If you now forgetting one thing, radar range is 50KM ,
Indian present 155/.45 Calibre has around 35-38 KM range and
new developing 155/52 calibre will be having 42-45 km.
Add to this , Consider Indian MBRLS range also.....
Now if you bring Missile , Consider Brahmos also in Action..

if you ask your Army , you cannot put M109 on hill top, For hill stand along guns are most perfect, Which can be reached easily though air and assembled again.

BTW which chopper will lift 28T Monster and without getting effected by Indian gun ?

As far as my knowledge goes , AESA radars are lest to get jammed by using the technology you have in ELINT/ EC/ESM etc. Until you think you are Far ahead from Israeli in this field technology.

Don't you think It already been taken care of using algorithms....Indian Army used / test this system in severe electronic clutter and “high density fire environment .

In mountain warfare Two Artillery is most suited but has disadv, that's why India bought Bofors, self moving tow artillery guns.

Indian Swati system has equivalent Chinese purush system that are in use with PA.

Pakistan Must have a Indian equivalent of Chinese Weapons Locating Radar like this SLC-2 operated by Bangladesh Army . so no worry .
