Russia and Japan haven’t been able to settle the issue of the Kuril Islands and sign a peace treaty since the end of World War II, resulting in a territorial dispute that’s been around for seven decades. But warm ties between the countries’ current leaders could lead to a breakthrough. Many are expecting progress to be made when Russian President Putin is in Japan for a state visit in December. Can the issue of the disputed islands be settled for good? And will Japan’s special relationship with America stand in the way of closer cooperation with Russia? Former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama is on SophieCo to discuss.

He is a sensible former PM.
But like all other Japanese PM who speak for Japan's own interests, they will be sacked by their American masters.
It's time for Japanese to stand for their own national interests instead of the interests of american war-mongering machines (not american people).

It was exactly Hatoyama who suggested an East Asia Community through exclusive regionalism in which US and other non-regional countries would be excluded.

However he was eventually decapitated.

The greatest roadblock before East Asia community making is the unrealistic dependency on the US for security. That's perhaps Japan's biggest dilemma.

Hence, we moved to PTA regionalism which has eventually created a spaghetti bowl of bilateral FTAs (In 2000, 3 PTAs, by 2013, more than 70).

Where I would like history to move: Asia's past should be its future (while, at the same time, Europe's past is becoming its future).

The biggest rock block is only Abe. He still hold the view Japanese is much superior, only inferior to Americans where he serves the white American master fatefully instead of his own Japanese people. Many Japanese start to realise the rise of China and China is leading them slowly in many areas which they used to dominate. Even the recent successfully launch of CZ-5 rocket has a massive impact on Japanese.

The debate of who is leading Asia space power cant come to a conclusion with both China and Japan having their own strength. But the powerful CZ-5 rocket settle that debate and change many Japanese view on China :enjoy:

Abe is just an americano puppet...
He never really speaks for Japanese people.
What a sad situation!

I agree although it is more of a systemic problem than personalities. Kouzumi was not a better president, as well as a bunch of others that came in and went out before Abe. The only refreshing period was during the DPJ period under Hatoyama.

So long as the LDP created system remains, it will continue to produce submissive leadership like Abe's. Under LDP governments, it was always Japan that diluted Asia- centered institutionalization and regionalization by inviting the US and its non-Asian Asia-Pacific partners.

We need strong exclusive regionalism to create a community in parallel with Eurasianism.
