Box office Report: Actor In Law, Janaan lead the way for ZKHH and Maalik
anaan moves ahead of Ho Mann Jahaan by earning Rs 16.03 crore in its fourth weekend.
HIP DESK ABOUT 2 HOURS AGO
Bollywood actress, Vidya Balan, once said, "films are all about entertainment, entertainment and entertainment", and we thought she's just saying that to sell her Dirty Picture, but now our box office report wholeheartedly reflects the rather shallow statement. Earlier this year, we saw coming of age film like Ho Mann Jahaan, a tragic tale like Hijrat, and an artsy script such as Mah-e-Mir, but, except for HMJ, all else faltered at the box office. Hence, proving that our masses love to watch full on entertainers like Janaan and Actor In Law. One can argue that the currently released films have better storylines and are well executed than the rest of the releases this year, but they're lighthearted stories nonetheless.

The recent report from the box office is that Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza's Actor In Law is still leading in terms of occupancy and business nationwide with Rs 22.15 crore in its kitty by the fourth weekend (October 8th) while IRK Films' Janaan is close behind with Rs 16.03 crores. Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai, however, lags behind and was grossing at Rs 10 crore on 28th September, as per their Facebook page.

Asir Azeem's film, Maalik, which came back to our cinema screens after facing a lot of bans and court rules, is also running across Pakistan (and even in UAE) and has earned over Rs 5.5 crore, as per the Head of Footprint Entertainment.

We're screening all three films [Janaan, AIL, and ZKHH] at the moment but Actor In Law is doing the best business at the box office," CEO of Mandviwalla Entertainment, Nadeem Mandviwalla, told HIP. "And the fall in the business is due to Muharram."

Janaan - distributed by ARY Films' - moved ahead of another ARY Films movie, Ho Mann Jahaan, as it crossed the Rs 16.03 crore mark.

If we speak of worldwide business, then Janaan has certainly outdone Actor In Law. It even broke Waar's record at the UK box office when it crossed the Rs 10 crore mark in just 20 days, and is now close to breaking Bin Roye's record. HUM Films' Bin Roye grossed over Rs 30 crores internationally and currently, Janaan is over Rs 25 crores, but it is imperative to note that Bin Roye ran in UK's cinemas for a longer period of time and did business slowly with time while Janaan has seen an initial spike. Will Janaan be able to maintain audience's interest internationally? Let's wait and watch.

But were our local releases able to cover up for the absence of Indian films in our cinemas? Mohsin Yaseen, General Manager Marketing of Cinepax cinemas, said that he cannot say for sure if absence of Indian films has impacted businesses of exhibitors yet because Muharram is always a slow season for cinemas so low business in this month isn't something unexpected.

A few days back, exhibitors in Pakistan had reached a collective decision to ban Indian films from their cinemas to show solidarity with our armed forces and artistes, who are being discriminated against by India's entertainment fraternity. Currently, most of Pakistani cinemas are showing the three Pakistani films mentioned above, Deepwater Horizon, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Sully, and Maalik.
