Was not expecting them to even participate in something like this

Anyway, kudos to Iran. Hopefully with the new Nuke deal and the sanctions being lifted we will see Iran's increased participation and competition with other nations in the world economy. The talented engineers and innovators in Iran will be "released" from the burdening sanctions and do what they do best for the benefit of Iran and the rest of the world.

Their nation's name always gives me the lolz. "Democratic" people's republic

Anyway bro, I hope so too. Hopefully some of those Iranian mathes field prize winners and Persians working for your NASA will return to Iran :D

We have almost always outmatched not only our neighbors, but also many developed and big countries in Olympiads, even with the amount of brain drain we have had!

I really don't think this is a good result .

what do you guys think ? much more potential here .

to sum it up , a "meh" result is achieved .
I agree, we used to be among the top five on a regular basis.

Brain drain starts after this level. All whom I knew went to Princeton, MIT, Stanford from Math and Physics for BSc after the Olympiad. There are good number of teachers to teach them the skills for these Olympiad despite the Brain drain.

Proud of the team, specially they did tremendous in Geometry but bad in Number Theory which is strange. They could have got higher ranking. Most probably timing issue. I have been in Olympiad training and I say by experience, Olympiads are not necessarily representing countries educational structure and competence. It is more like the educational background, talent + extreme training in previous exams and topics include in the Olympiad by the specialized coaches. USA got first this time because of that and the new coach is given most credit. Anyway all the top teams there are doing that so still its a fair game in hard training, IQ, skill and experience. Well done team Iran. Well done Team USA.

Out of Top 5 nations, 4 are orientals. So the stereotype that Math is something orientals excel at hold true, LOL.

Sadly the braindrain come mainly after these olympiads.

Well done Iranian brothers and sisters.

Do you not read daily achievements of Pakistani students on this forum? or you really want to start a dick measuring contest?

Your "daily achievements" certainly were not part of this Olympiad competition considering how Pakistan ranked 85th.
I have respect for our Pakistani friends, but don't kid yourself here.
